The need for temperature tracking solutions… Ensuring that fresh and frozen produce such as vegetables or ice cream are kept at appropriate temperatures during all phases of transportation and storage from manufacturer to consumer, is immensely important for retailers like customers. Customers are increasingly concerned about the quality of foods, and failure to guarantee the highest quality at all times can have a significant impact on the public image of retailers. In addition, the European Commission has passed legislation (CE #37/2005) demanding all vehicles used in cold chain food produce transportation to be equipped with temperature tracing technology starting January 1st, 2006. As a consequence, retailers must know and be able to prove the correct handling of their frozen and cold food products to legal control entities at all times.

Yet, those measurements, being purely manual, are often cumbersome, time- consuming, and may sometimes be inaccurate or even entirely omitted. Also, this approach is unlikely to reveal significant temporary exceptions that occurred in between two measure points. In the worst case those procedures may lead to spoilage of produce as they typically mandate a verification “at the heart” of the produce in case of doubt Accenture, Psion and Identec Solutions have jointly developed an offering that addresses the described shortcomings using active RFID and temperature sensing technology.
