Style Trends Baltic Porters

Style History  Baltic Porters are named for the countries bordering the Baltic Sea  This style of beer traces its origins back to the British breweries of the 18th and 19th Centuries intent on exporting their darker ales from England to ports to the north via the Baltic Sea  The porters and stouts exported at this time were higher in alcohol and more highly hopped to preserve them for their long sea journey

Style History  Cultures along the Baltic Sea were lager brewers, so despite being called a “Porter” (a style from the ale family), as this beer was adopted in the Baltic region, the local version (as opposed to what had been imported) was most commonly brewed with bottom fermenting lager yeast  As a result, consumers might be surprised when their Baltic Porter possess very distinct lager characteristics

Style Profile  Baltic Porters range from dark red or copper to dark brown in color  Baltic Porters have an aroma that is malty sweet with notes of caramel, toffee, roasted malts, and licorice.  Baltic Porters are generally smooth and malty sweet with low hop bitterness, just slightly dry, with a hint of roast coffee or licorice in the finish.

What Goes Into a Great Beer? A complex balance of ingredients contribute to a beer’s appearance, aroma, and flavor Water – first step in forming a beer’s character. Barley Malt – defines the body of a beer, contributing to a beer’s sweetness, color, and foamy head. Malt also brings enzymes to the fermentation process. Hops – responsible for overarching flavor and aroma of the beer through the use of both flavor and aroma hops. Yeast – the DNA of the style or brand and is what initiates the fermentation process and brings the beer to life. Adjuncts – additive fruits (cherries), spices (cinnamon) grains (oatmeal), sweeteners Promoting and Preserving the Beer Experience Tasting beer Pouring Beer
