2 Katsushika Hokusai Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾 北斎?, October 31, 1760 (exact date questionable) – May 10, 1849) was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker At the age of 12, he was sent by his father to work in a bookshop and lending library, a popular type of institution in Japanese cities, where reading books made from wood-cut blocks At 14, he became an apprentice to a wood-carver, the age of 18, whereupon he was accepted into the studio of Katsukawa Shunshō. Shunshō was an artist of ukiyo-e, a style of wood block prints and paintings that Hokusai would master, and head of the so-called Katsukawa school. his work became focused on landscapes and images of the daily life of Japanese people from a variety of social levels. This change of subject was a breakthrough in ukiyo-e and in Hokusai's career Hokusai had a long career, but he produced most of his important work after age 60. His most popular work is the ukiyo-e series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which was created between 1826 and 1833

Wash Spray or brush water on paper With wet brush paint across the surface Tilt slightly for the drip Stop dripping not wanted with a paper towel Should be very translucent or see through This is called painting wet on wet

Lifting Use a dry brush Or use a paper towel Gently dab towel on area

Bleeding/Blend Spray gently the dry brush strokes or Drop water Will make color translucent

Lift color with paper towel

24 Revise/Edit Color Streaks Drop water on streaks Smooth out the color
Or drop color around to even out

25 Produce Paper Doll Body Trace body (Do Not Cut) Draw hair style
Now Cut

26 Produce Paper Doll Kimono Draw your design then cover with oil pastel
Paint over the oil pastel lightly Kimono This is a piece of cloth wrapped around a body (like a robe) You are designing the fabric You can use the Hokusai pictures for inspiration or create your own pattern

27 Produce Paper Doll Kimono Paint the strip for the sash
Add the sash by wrapping around the kimono Fold corners Fold in a trifold around the doll
