S TRUCTURE OF L IVING T HINGS Cells, nucleus, organelles, diffusion, osmosis, tissue, organ, organ system, organism

T YPES OF CELLS What are these main two types of cells? How do you know?

A NIMAL M ODEL C ELL Make a model of an animal cell using the materials you have been given. Show the following: Nucleus Cell membrane Cytoplasm Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi Complex Ribosomes Lysosomes Vacuoles Mitochondria

C ELLS Cells are alive! Cells are the basic unit of structure and function. All cells are produced from existing cells. All basic functions of an organism such as; repair, growth, movement, immunity, communication and digestion are carried out within the cells themselves.

D IFFUSION What is it? How does diffusion relate to a cell? What part of the cell allows diffusion to take place?

O SMOSIS What is it? What is being diffused? What determines which way the osmosis occurs? How do diffusion and osmosis relate to the motion of particles?

D IFFUSION & O SMOSIS Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. This phenomenon is due to the random motion of molecules. Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane. Osmosis happens through the cell membrane of the cell.

L EVEL OF O RGANIZATION What is the level of organization of a living thing from simple to complex? A. B. C. D. E. Name two examples in each level.

C ELLS Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things. They are the building blocks of life. The way an organism is structured and all of the functions of the organism depend on the cells.

T ISSUE Tissue is a group of similar cells that perform the same function. The human body contains four types of tissue: Muscle tissue Epithelial tissue Connective tissue Nerve tissue

O RGANS An organ is a structure that is composed of different kinds of tissue. An organ performs a specific job. That job is more complex than that of a tissue. Name an organ and tell how its structure is related to its parts. How is related to the organ system?

O RGAN S YSTEMS An organ system is a group of organs that work together to perform a major function. Each organ is part of an organ system. Some of the organ systems in the human body are: Circulatory System Digestive System Nervous System Respiratory System Immune System Reproductive System

O RGANISMS Organisms are living things. Each organism has unique structures suited to its particular way of life. Complex organisms are made up of organ systems that work together and depend on one another to keep the organism alive.
