MINERAL RESEARCH PROJECT Lauren and Caroline

GOAL  Our aim during this project was to look at what minerals help your skin from aging, acne and dry skin.  Our objective was to find what minerals help with acne, aging, and dry skin. We were going to research the certain effects these minerals have on your face. Then, we had was we want to know what minerals you can add to your diet that helps your skin.  Our first topic was we are going to research what minerals are good for our face. We want to know what minerals will help with acne, dry skin and aging. Our new topic is we want to know what minerals we can add in our diet to help our skin.

REALITY  We do not have enough time to look at all of the minerals in the world that may have good effects on our face. Therefore, we are only going to look at zinc, sulfur and selenium. We did research on the these three minerals and found so many benefits that they have have on the skin on our face.  We found that the best way to get the minerals are not by a topical treatment but adding it in your diet. We found that the best way to get the minerals are by consuming certain foods that are high quality, clean and whole.

ZINC  has incredible benefits in healing and repairing damaged skin  is an antioxidant  protects against UV radiation therefore, a great sunscreen  zinc oxide is used as sunscreen, in pure form, it has a very white color  regulates the release of vitamin A from the Liver (which is good for your skin)  in regards to acne, zinc is especially helpful working as an anti-inflammatory agent, helping in prevention of breakouts but also decreasing scarring.  it can reduce the amount of natural oil it produces

SULFUR  it is the third most abundant mineral in your body, your body needs it  if some people don't get enough of it, it can cause initial skin symptoms  dermatologists recommend topical sulfur ointments for treating acne, dermatitis, rosacea, eczema and even dandruff.  people used to use sulfur to relieve pain and prevent aging

SELENIUM  Selenium is a powerful antioxidant, paired with vitamin E  Helps to boost glutathione production in the body  it can potentially help to decrease and control acne  The combination of antioxidants can create a great anti-inflammatory effect and fight off free radicals

OPTIONS Most of the foods that are good sources of zinc, sulfur and selenium are healthy, clean and whole. We suggest that people eat any food rich in zinc, sulfur and selenium. Best food sources of Zinc:  Oysters and other shellfish  Veal Liver  Roast Beef  Lamb  Pumpkin Seeds Best food sources of Sulfur:  Grass fed pastured meats, like beef and chicken  Pastured eggs  Garlic  Onions- The more potent and stronger the smell and effect (think eyes watering), the more sulfur they contain.  Brussels sprouts  Asparagus  Kale  Fermented cruciferous vegetables, such as traditionally prepared sauerkraut Best food sources of Selenium:  Organ Meats  Fish, such as sardines and salmon are particularly high  Pastured Meats- beef, turkey, lamb  Liver  Brazil Nuts

WRAP-UP  In the beginning of the project, we had a hard time deciding on our original question. Also, once we decided on a question it was too broad and we had to narrow it down and make it more specific. Now, we are talking about just foods with minerals rather than other things such as topical treatments.  We have answered our original question and more. We have learned about what minerals were good for our skin with dryness, acne and aging. We expanded it to learn about what foods people can eat in our diet to help with their skin.

OUR DAILY LOG  3/20/15 - We planned out some possible questions, we then decided that we were going to look at, what minerals are good or bad for your skin on your face?  3/23/15 - We started our research about minerals that were good for our skin, and we found that it is better and more efficient to consume the good minerals in various foods rather than any other way.  3/24/15 - We had a short class today. We looked at some of the foods that were high in zinc, sulfur and selenium and found that most of them were, good whole, clean and healthy foods.  3/26/15 - We have wrapped up or research today. We finished filling in the chart and the wiki page. We are now ready to start putting together a presentation so we will be ready to present by Monday, 3/30/15.  3/27/15 – Today we started our PowerPoint. We gathered all of our research and information and organized it in a way it would make sense for the PowerPoint.  3/30/15 - Presentations
