 Recap on previous class using our storyboards – Pick out main points  Piece together the Demographic Transition Model - Categorising Birth rate, Death rate and total population into the 5 stages  Identify the factors that influence the rate of population change

Demographic Transition Model Stage 1Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 4 Stage 5 Green = Death rate Red = Birth rate Blue = Total pop High Middle Low

The demographic transition model (DT) This is the transition from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates as a country develops from a pre-industrial to an industrialized economic system. birthdeath rateseconomic systembirthdeath rateseconomic system

 Can you list 5 factors that would influence the rate of population change?  1) Food Supply  2) Health  3)Improved Technology  4) War  5) Education

When countries develop – Food supplies usually improve - People become healthier, live longer and so have more children! Ireland – Great Famine 1845-1849 – Population of Ireland reduced greatly!! Brazil – Recent example – Food production increased steadily, Population has trebled in the past 50 years!!

Public health has improved greatly! Clean water supplies very important! Many easy curable diseases eg measles and whooping cough have declined. As the death rate declined population grew! When do you think health care began to improve in Ireland and Germany???

Improved technology helps people to live longer Water pumps Farm machinery Medical equipment This can be seen in both Ireland and Germany but has not yet had the same effect on all Brazilians

Wars greatly reduce the population numbers! Germany lost millions in WW1 AND WW2 Thousands of Irish also died in these wars

Better education leads to lower birth rates! More likely if well educated to take part in family planning In Brazil, Women receive little formal education. Tend to have larger families

 Do you believe in the pessimistic view or the optimistic view? Write down an explanation for your reasons.
