6 Authoritative This is characterized by a child-centered approach that holds high expectations of maturity, compliance to parental rules and directions, while allowing for an open dialogue about those rules and behaviors between the parent and child. Clear standards and Permissive Fear dampening a child’s spirit Encourage independence Warm and Responsive Explain motives for punishment/ more forgiving

7 Authoritarian This style is characterized by high expectations of conformity and compliance to parental rules and directions, that does not allow for open dialogue between parent and child. Unresponsive to childs needs Strict enforcement of rules with little flexibility More likely to spank child Child may lack social competence No questions asked Children may rebel against controlling parents if freedoms are not granted as the grow

8 Permissive This is characterized as having few behavioral expectations for the child and is characterized by warm affect. Parents are nurturing and accepting, but non-demanding. Responsive to needs and wishes Lack control of children Don’t regulate appropriate behaviors Want child to like them at end of day Children have low level of achievement Children are impulsive

9 Neglectful These parent do not care much at all for the child. Low in warmth and control Disengaged No limits Low responsiveness Only provide basic needs More focused on their own needs

10 Debates/Decisions Misconceptions The following are parenting questions you may need to decide as a parent, possibly with a partner To do an Amniocentesis ( Test to find out about baby health) or not to do Circumcise or not male babies Breast feed or bottle (how long?) –Nutrients that are essential for child. –6-12 months Pacifier or thumb or nothing Sleep: basinet, swing, car seat or with parents in bed –When to crib, when to give own room Day care or stay home

11 Considering parenting styles ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS AND HAND IN AT THE END OF THE PERIOD 1.What parenting styles were used by your parents? 2.What messages about parenting would you like to tell your father? Mother? Brother or sister? Grandparents? Children? 3.What message about parenting would you like to receive from your children, now or in the future? 4.Consider your own childhood experiences. What is your fondest childhood memory? 5.How can you learn more about effective parenting (list 5) This assignment is worth 10 points.

13 Role Playing Now its your turn to be the parent. Your group will pick a scenario and act it out. Be respectful, be serious, be appropriate, and have fun! Remember – put yourself in your parents shoes.
