Commercial Aviation Safety Team (TEAM) Mode Awareness and Energy State Management Aspects of Flight Deck Automation Mode Awareness and Energy State Management Aspects of Flight Deck Automation 20 November 2008 - Bangkok Kyle L. Olsen SE-30

Mode Awareness and Energy State Management Aspects of Flight Deck Automation Automation has contributed to sustained improvement in safety. Automation has a limit in complex and highly automated aircraft.

Mode Awareness and Energy State Management Aspects of Flight Deck Automation Situational awareness can be lost if the following is not well understood: –Automation mode in which the aircraft is operating –Interaction between the mode of automation and a phase of flight or pilot input. Mode confusion can lead to: –Mismanaging the energy state of the aircraft. –Deviating from the intended flight path.

Loss of Control Joint Safety Analysis Team Identified automation mode confusion as a contributing factor. A sub-team was chartered to study and address mode confusion. Objective to minimize the frequency which pilots experience mode confusion and undesirable energy states.

Sub-team Report Final version, Revision 5 of the report was issued in August 2008. Part One: Methodology and Central Findings Part Two: SE-30 Recommended Automation Policy Exemplar. Appendices A through E, contain background.

Part Two: SE-30 Recommended Automation Policy Exemplar 1.Philosophy & Approach to the Use of Automation 2.Choice of Systems or “Levels” of Automation 3.Situation Awareness 4.Communication and Coordination 5.Verification 6.System and Crew Monitoring 7.Workload and System Use 8.Summary

Proposal Operators to use the report to review and revise, if necessary their automation policy. COSCAP to prepare an Advisory Circular covering the essential points of the Sub- team Report.
