1 University of Northampton Student Led Teaching Awards 2014

2 Increasing desire to work with students to develop the student experience Pilot project between HEA and NUS in 2009 Increasing number of Universities and SU’s working on SLTA Desire to create a sense of partnership between HERE AT Northampton Increase NSS scores and involve students in the process The Background

3 Engage all students, including part-time students, distance learners and partner colleges, about what they believe constitutes good teaching Showcase this best practice to the University and students, through a series of follow up events, as currently this is not carried out at the University of Northampton Condense this evidence into a format where other academics are able to learn from these example of good academic practice Embed the student voice into learning and teaching and demonstrate the impact it can have The objectives

4 The nature of the awards mean that they are student led and carried out in partnership with the institution. Students were on the committee deciding the winners Events management students planned the awards evening, with students running the awards evening itself Course Reps promoted the awards to their peers Graphics Design students created the certificates and trophies Involvement

5 248 Nominations received across the following categories Outstanding Lecturer of the Year: An award demonstrating someone who has gone ‘above and beyond’ to contribute to a students learning experience Innovative Teaching Award- Someone who has a different approach to teaching Contribution to Outstanding Support- An award showcasing the importance of supporting students in their learning experience. The Awards

6 Contribution to Outstanding Support- Ivna Reic, Northampton Business School Innovative Teaching of the Year- Drew Gray, School of Social Sciences Outstanding Lecturer of the Year- Patrick Campbell, School of the Arts The Winners

7 Every person nominated will receive a thermal mug, all those shortlisted have received a certificate Currently analysing the nominations to extract what students believe is good teaching across the institution All nominated will receive their comments The winners will also be recognised through the graduation ceremonies School are encouraged to hold local events Reward and Recognition

8 Secured SU funding and hopefully University Based on feedback there will be another category More involvement from the student voice off campus Break down the barriers to engagement Work with Science and Technology to increase the number of nominations Looking ahead
