3 Re-classify Pile of specimens Classification, Concepts & Names Existing Type specimens Name the taxon concepts – Reuse names for EXISTING type specimens… a b d c Appoint extra type specimens and name them f e Taxonomic Hierarchy According to Y

4 Re-classify Pile of specimens Classification, Concepts & Names Existing Type specimens Name the taxon concepts – Reuse names for OLDEST type specimens… a b d c e h g Appoint extra type specimens and name them Taxonomic Hierarchy According to Z

5 What do the names mean? or type: c or type: d ortype: e f g h or b type: If someone tells you they have a b how do you interpret that? If you want to identify how do you decide what to call it? Given there are 3(4) interpretations how do you know if it’s the same “kind of” b you have? What criteria do you use to decide what is? The criteria are tied to the classification created by the taxonomist To be clear about what you mean refer to the classification e.g. c according to X which means anything in the scope as defined by X If we restrict our understanding of the name to that of the type specimen (h) then we would miss the fact that had been identified in the past but would’ve been called c which one of these individuals is a d? It depends on whose definition of d you mean….
