www.earthobservations.org www.gfoi.org SDCG-6 Oslo, Norway October 22-24, 2014 SDCG role Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS).. ”accepts responsibility for …coordination of the regular and routine (systematic) observations and measurements for effective reporting – ensuring continuity of data supply for maintenance of time series and consistent reporting through GFOI” CEOS established a dedicated Space Data Coordination Group (SDCG) for GFOI in late 2011 as part of THE CEOS STRATEGY FOR SPACE DATA COVERAGE AND CONTINUITY IN SUPPORT OF THE GEO GLOBAL FOREST OBSERVATIONS INITIATIVE (GFOI) AND FOREST CARBON TRACKING (FCT) TASK

www.earthobservations.org www.gfoi.org SDCG-6 Oslo, Norway October 22-24, 2014 CEOS Data Strategy for GFOI Element 1: A baseline, coordinated global data acquisition strategy involving a number of ‘core data streams’ that can be used free-of-charge for GFOI purposes. This will involve systematic and sustained wall-to-wall acquisitions of forested areas globally Element 2: A coordinated strategy for national data acquisitions Element 3: Data supply in support of the FCT activities, including in support of: the science studies assisting the development and evolution of the GEO-branded methods and protocol documents for GFOI

www.earthobservations.org www.gfoi.org SDCG-6 Oslo, Norway October 22-24, 2014 The Space Data Component of GFOI CEOS effort to coordinate the satellite data contribution to GFOI. Aim to ensure regular and systematic observations and measurements for effective reporting. Continuity of data supply for the maintenance of consistent time series. 4

Landsat-8 is now capturing 650 scenes per day, covering all mid-latitude landmasses. Sentinel-1A (ESA) was launched on the 3 rd of April 2014, and is currently in its commissioning phase. ALOS-2 (JAXA) was launched on the 24 th of May 2014 and is also in a commissioning phase. Sentinel-2A upcoming (early 2015), Radarsat-2, TerraSAR- X/TanDEM-X, and COSMO-SkyMed in operation. It is also hoped that CBERS-4 will be launched in late 2014. 8

www.earthobservations.org www.gfoi.org SDCG-6 Oslo, Norway October 22-24, 2014 Element 2 Global baseline is a statement of capability Element 2 requires national needs of individual governments to be explored and coverage to be guaranteed in detail Take account of readiness and existing activities – strategy may be modified if readiness not confirmed Engagement of relevant institutions in-country Establish supply channels and arrangements Practical data coverage strategy and detailed plan for the immediate year ahead Identify role for non-core data streams, engage suppliers

www.earthobservations.org www.gfoi.org SDCG-6 Oslo, Norway October 22-24, 2014 GFOI Space Data Services 1.Regional GFOI Space Data Workshops (USGS/SilvaCarbon)  Leveraging SilvaCarbon in Africa, South America and Asia 2.Impartial National Space Data Needs Assessments (SDCG and SEO)  Service to individual governments seeking to establish their MRV strategies and the role of space data therein 3.National Historical Coverage Reports (SDCG and SEO)  By request, assessment of what satellite data exist for a given country or region for past years to support establishment of reference levels 4.Ensured On-going Coverage (SDCG and Core Data Stream providers)  Tailored support to ensure on-going national baseline acquisitions (Element 1) 5.Satellite Data Discovery, Assembly and Delivery (SDCG, SEO, and CDS providers)  Support to core data handling and delivery 6.Cloud Storage, Processing and Analysis of Satellite Data (SDCG, SEO, FAO)  Includes collaboration with FAO and SEO on data delivery and processing infrastructure contributed by Norway

www.earthobservations.org www.gfoi.org SDCG-6 Oslo, Norway October 22-24, 2014 GFOI Space Data Services Space Data Services paper circulated – please review it and get in touch! SDCG is available to support your space data needs in relation to national MRV Let us know your status and plans in relation to the use of space data

www.earthobservations.org www.gfoi.org SDCG-6 Oslo, Norway October 22-24, 2014 Methods and Guidance Documentation (MGD) The other main GFOI deliverable besides space data GFOI involves application of the MGD in unison with the space data supply - to estimate and report on changes in forests and carbon stocks in a manner consistent with IPCC methodologies and United UNFCCC requirements.
