2 Joint Master Degrees in a nutshell Joint Master Degrees are 60, 90 or 120 ECTS course programmes organised by consortium of higher education institutions. Focus is on o award scholarships to excellent students worldwide o involve guest lecturers for teaching, training and/or research purposes 1 preperatory year and 3 consecutive student intakes, min. 3 Programme countries, study in at least 2 Programme Countries Funding for management and student scholarships: between 2 000 000 and 3 000 000 EUR for whole grant Yearly deadline = 27 March 200X Start between 1 August and 31 October 200X

9 Expected results of this type of funding = Contribute to the Europe 2020 and Education & Training 2020 strategies Quality improvement, innovation, excellence and internationalisation of the involved higher education institutions Quality and attractiveness if European Higher Education Area by offering full degree scholarships to the best Master students worldwide Supporting EU external actions in higher education Improving level of competencies and skills of Master graduates (labour market relevance)

11 Results, dissemination & exploitation Multiplier events organisation of national and transnational conferences/seminars/events aimed at sharing and disseminating the intellectual outputs realised by the project multiplier events taking place in a Partner Country are not eligible for funding! Assessment of success Facts and figures related to the website of project organisers (updates, visits, consultation, cross referencing); Numbers of meetings with key stakeholders; Numbers of participants involved in discussions and information sessions (workshops, seminars, peer reviews); follow-up measures; Visibility in the social media; Participation in public events; Links with existing networks and transnational partners; transfer of information and know-how; Impact on regional, national, EU policy measures; Feedback from end-users, other stakeholders, peers, policy-makers

13 Joint Master degrees – timing Launch call Selection and granting procedure: 2014 Preperatory year: September 2014 – September 2015 3 consecutive intakes for 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017- 2018 4 or 5 year grant agreement (depending on 1 or 2 year programmes)

14 First call Deadline current call = March 27 2014, 12h00 (Brussels time) Start granted projects = between 1 August and 31 October 2014 9 grants will be funded Calls launched and managed by EACEA Average budget/grant = 1,9 million euros

15 Programme & partner countries Erasmus+ Programme countries o EU-28 (including Overseas Country and Territory depending on Denmark, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom ) o Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland o Turkey and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Rest of the world = partner countries ( limitations per action and calls may apply ) Western Balkan Eastern Partnership countries South- Mediterranean countries Third countries neighbouring the EU Industrialised countries Africa, Carribean and Pacific Asia and Latin-America Other partner countries

16 What is funded? (1/3) The delivery of a joint master programme 60, 90 or 120 ECTS programmes three consecutive cohorts off student intakes (4 or 5 year grant agreements depending on the length of the Joint Master Degree programme) organised by and international consortium of HEIs guest lecturers are to be included for teaching, tarining and/or research purposes a lump sum covering the consortium management fees and a mandatory minimum number of teaching (staff mobility) The award of scholarships to excellent students worldwide a lumpsum for individual student scholarships covering the entire duration of the Joint Master Degree scholarship varies in accordance with the students' country of origin, the duration and the amount of tuition fees charged by the Joint Master Degree consortium, The scholarship will contribute to cover: travel costs, installation costs, subsistence costs, course fees and insurance costs Maximum EU- cofinancing rate = 80% Minimum three HEIs from three different participating countries, one of which must be an EU Member State. The active participation of at least one organisation from the non-academic world

17 What is funded? (2/3) Joint Master Degree management € 20 000 for the preparatory year€ 50 000 per intake

(2/3) Joint Master Degree student scholarships Participation costs (higher amounts must be covered by the participating organisations, never by the student): Max. € 9000/year/scholarship from a partner country Max. € 4500/year/scholarship from a programme country Travel and installation costs: €1000/year/scholarship holder resident of a Programme Country for travel costs €2000/year for travel costs + €1000 for installation costs for scholarship holder resident of a Partner Country whose location is situated at less than 4000 km from the coordinating HEI €3000/year for travel costs + €1000 for installation costs for scholarship holder resident of a Partner Country whose location is situated at 4000 km or more from the coordinating HEI Subsistence costs (except for study/research/placement/thesis preparation activities spent in their country of residence): € 1000/month for the entire duration of the JMD study programme (24 months maximum).

19 Important notes on scholarships! No more than 3 canidates from the same country (with the same natioanlity) should be awarded a scholarship during the same intake Self-funded students should be approx. 25% of Erasmus+ grant holders Grant holders from previous Erasmus Mundus programme of JMD programme are not eligible Scholarship holders cannot transfer university credits prior to enrolment in JMD to reduce mandatory activities Cumulation of grants for JMD scholarships with Erasmus+ student or staff mobility grants is not allowed !

Centralised action  Selection and management by the Executive Agency Education, Audiovisual and Culture (EACEA) Coordinator = HEI from a Programme countryAll participating HEIs from Programme Countries in the consortium hold an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education establish interinstitutional agreements amongst each other All HEIs from Partner Countries establish interinstitutional agreements with HEIs from Programme Countries Non-academic partners enterprises and other representatives of the world of work; research institutions; bodies active in the area of education and training; non-profit organisations, NGOs; associations, foundations, and other bodies involved in the fields of education and training; local, regional and national public authorities; …

25 Selected Joint Master Degrees Long term support to increase worldwide visibility and sustainability prospects Initial funding period = 4 tot 5 years with 3 consecutive student intakes Then, quality review for the best Joint Master Degrees If approved, then uptake in Joint Master Degrees Catalogue with additional funding for three student intakes

26 Erasmus Mundus Master Courses After successful quality review: additional funding period of up to 3 student intakes By the end of agreement, then invitation to apply for selection procedure (quality review) to the Joint Master Degree Catalogue Current 138 existing Erasmus Mundus Master Courses will be funded until their end of contract
