Why Do We Need to Have Safety Rules in the Lab? Introduction 1.Conducting laboratory experiments is a part of doing science to learn about nature and its laws. 2.Laboratory experiments can involve materials and instruments that can hurt a scientist or a person next to him. 3.To avoid possible accidents we need to know the safe practices in the lab and follow those practices.. 4.It is everybody’s responsibility to follow the safety rules and procedures. Fun! Danger!

Chemistry Lab in the Past http://www.chemheritage.org/discover/media/magazine/articles/26-2-not-so-great-moments-in-chemical-safety.aspx Smoking was allowed in the labs. Safety glasses and gloves were not required.

1920s - No lab coat. The classic 20s look and the really elaborate chemical laboratory setup! http://www.norafinds.com/post/31071126129/vintagelabfashion 1940 - No gloves, no safety glasses Pictures From the Past

Why Food and Drinks Must be Kept Outside of the Lab? 1.You can contaminate your food with chemicals you are working with and harm yourself. 2.You can drink a chemical by mistake if you have a drink next to you during an experiment. Food Free Area Beyond this point! Please Leave Your Food and Drinks Outside of the Classroom. Thank you! Before Entering the Laboratory…

Gloves Safety glasses or Goggles Lab Coat or An Apron Use Personal Protective Gears (PPG) Ventilation Hood Protects you from breathing harmful fumes Inside the Laboratory…

Names and Terminology of Common Safety Items Safety glasses or Goggles Safety gloves Protect from sharps Nitrile gloves Protect hands from spills Protected handSpill Lab coats, smocks, and aprons protect the skin and clothes from chemical spills

Wise!Be Protect Your Eyes! The Eyes and Hands are at Most Risk to be Injured During the Lab Experiments. 1. 3. Protect Your Hands! Protect Your Legs! Wear long pants and shoes that cover toes. 2.

4. Protect your clothes from chemical spills Wear the lab coat. If a spill occurs, remove the lab coat as soon as possible! Ready to start the experiment!? Is anything missing from this picture? Last but not least: loose hair must be tied on the back!

If Accident Happened The classroom has an eye washing station and emergency shower Eye washing Station Emergency Shower

Bunsen Burner Robert Bunsen (German) was an accomplished chemist and a great teacher of his time.

Is There Anything Wrong in These Pictures? 1. Perfect! 2. No gloves, no safety glasses 3. No gloves, no safety glasses 4 Perfect! 5. No gloves, no safety glasses
