Biomes: Coral Reef By: Acacia Nikiel

THE CORAL REEF Coral reef are mostly found near the equator in the oceans. Coral Reefs hold 25 percent of the marine life. The coral reef are super beautiful, their amazing to go snorkeling. But since human activities are harming them, they are being damaged from over fishing and pollution. We need minimize this so the coral reefs can stay. http://www.mbgnet.net/salt/coral/where.htm

Coral reef fish Clown Fish FUN FACT There is a layer of mucus, which protects The clown fish from stings, which is why They can live in the sea anemone! Clown fish are fish and every fish can breath underwater so, clown fish can too! Dwarf Seahorse (hippocampus) FUN FACT! Dwarf seahorses are just under ONE INCH long! When they get tired they hook on to a blade of sea grass! Zebra Moray Eel FUN FACT! These eels are quite shy and they eat crabs! And whenever their eyes are open and their mouth is open and it looks like their going to eat you, they won’t that’s just how they breathe plus they don’t have sharp teeth they have plate like teeth! http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/ animals/AnimalDetails.aspx?enc=n3f4w mcSJaO0z33cvrEuoghttp://www.montereybayaquarium.org/ animals/AnimalDetails.aspx?enc=n3f4w mcSJaO0z33cvrEuog== http:// www.montereybayaquarium.org/animal s/AnimalDetails.aspx?enc=n3f4wmcSJaPi 2UwQD+n1xgwww.montereybayaquarium.org/animal s/AnimalDetails.aspx?enc=n3f4wmcSJaPi 2UwQD+n1xg== http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/ animals/fish/clown-anemonefish/

Coral reef plants Sea Anemone FUN FACT: clown fish use these aquatic plants for their homes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_anemone http://www.seagrasswatch.org/seagrass.html http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/invertebrates/coral/ SEA GRASS FUN FACT: Sea grass have been around since dinosaurs roamed the earth CORAL FUN FACT: Microscopic algae make the coral get its color and energy

Where are coral reefs Coral reef are mostly found near the equator in the tropical oceans. The largest coral reef (the great barrier reef) can be found in Australia, the second largest can be found in the coast of Belize, in central America. The image below shows the great barrier reef Bibliography: http://www.mbgnet.net/salt/coral/where.htm

Abiotic Factors Coral reefs are everywhere so its kind of hard to find an exact temperature but here is the most general temperature (in farin height) 74F- 84F. Most coral reefs don’t live in colder temperatures than 18 degrees Celsius. Coral reef form normally in 23 degrees north latitude ( 23 degrees south latitude. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_temper ature_in_coral_reefs

Human Activities Of course humans like eating fish, such as salmon, tuna even some people like to eat sushi! But over fishing is a problem, because if people over fish the fish population will decrease and the other animals that eat fish will starve to death. So we won’t have fish left will only have some kind in marine life sanctuaries but we should take care fish only for the fish we (or your family) needs. I don’t think fishing or hunting should be a sport because you killing animals your killing lives. Sometimes you kill a mother whose nursing her baby. Everybody including animals have a family. 8 Human Activities Because of the human activities, people can eat fish, get medicines, and jobs etc.. So there are some good to this but the thing is there isn’t much good to the coral reefs. Biblipgraphy Me http://ocean.si.edu/ocean-life-ecosystems/coral- reefs/human-connections http://ocean.si.edu/ocean-life-ecosystems/coral- reefs/human-connections

Human Activities How do they make use of the coral reef, well it seems like the coral reef have some sort of medicine in them that can help the world rather than feed the world. Many of the coral reef species produce chemicals such as histamines and antibiotics that are used in medicines and science. http://www.gaiadiscovery.com/marine-life- latest/medicines-from-coral-reefs.html

Human Activities (pollution) The coral reefs are very fragile, so pollution is very bad. Its basically toxic to them. Now, can we live in a toxic waste, no we can’t so how can the fish live, the answer is they don’t. they die, and the fish that do make it out won’t be for long with no home or food they will be gone. Fish can suffocate, coral reefs can be trampled or crushed by the stuff we put in the ocean. We have garbage's so why don’t we use them, the ocean is NOT a big trash can, its life. bibliography Me http://library.thinkquest.org/CR0215471/coral_reef.htm

Human Activities Other problems they cause. People must find another way to transport oil or be more careful because oil spill in the oceans and horrible to the coral reefs. Plants can’t live in oil, neither can fish, So they end up dying. If there are no more coral reefs fish are going to have a really hard time looking for a new home. bibliography Mehttp://library.thinkquest.org/CR0215471/coral _reef.htm

What will become of the coral reef if Human Activity or global warming increases. Well coral reefs get its energy and color from microscopic algae that lives in their tissue, when environmental factors go out of range (such as warm waters/global warming) the connection between the algae and the coral reef breaks and the algae turn white and that leaves the coral reefs to die. coral reefs (hopefully) won’t become extinct but they will only grow in certain habitats such as shaded areas, so coral reef will be hard to find. So if we want to keep our coral reefs we must stop global warming follow the advice from people who are trying to save the environment as well. Help them and we will have a brighter future. Me http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/02/100221200908.ht m http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/02/100221200908.ht m

Human Activities Solutions/Compromises to stop BAD human activity so what we can do to try and minimize these damages, is to find another way to transport oil or be SUPER careful, only take the fish that we need, people should kill for food not for sport, and well use your trash cans don’t you feel guilty when you liter. Think about it probably every time you liter, something (fish/animal/bug/bird) dies. Mankind don’t have to do this, but if we want a nice safe non-toxic environment for future generation and now we must do something. bibliography me

Conclusion People should take care of our world, for the future. We should take care of our waters and land. Help each other, do small things like earth hour, recycling, simple stuff that can help save our environment.
