1 Alternatives to Standardized and Teacher Made Tests By: Vanessa Gossett

2 Progress Monitoring It is a test that helps determine how the teacher is instructing and if it is making since to the students they are teaching. This test can be distributed to a class as a whole or to an individual person.

3 Progress Monitoring Cont. Progress Monitoring is also used to determine if a student is at a “risk of failing” or if there is “behavioral problems.” Progress Monitoring can be used to see how a student is progressing in Math and English. It is also a way to determine if a student is in the correct grade level.

4 Progress Monitoring Cont. Students should be tested at least once a month. It is also recommended that students are tested weekly or biweekly. These Progress Monitoring tests should be given by the classroom teacher, a school psychologist or a special education teacher. The tests are usually given to elementary, middle and high school students.

5 Progress Monitoring Cont. The scores of the Progress Monitoring are used to determine if the student should get a promotion, graduate, and in certain areas to determine what type of diploma a student should receive.

6 Progress Monitoring Pictures This test is a picture test. It gives you options of different types of furniture for each picture.

7 Progress Monitoring Pictures Cont. This test is a reading fluency test. This test is to measure how well a student can read and at what pace. It also measure how much the student will read in a certain amount of time.

8 Progress Monitoring Pictures Cont. This test is to determine if the students are comprehending the vocabulary words in the Reading unit.

9 Educational Games Video games are said to be a positive success when the game is identifying a certain problem. Video games and computer games are also design to help teachers teach specific skill.

10 Educational Games Cont. Students who are actively playing educational games tend to have more empathy towards other people. If a teacher is unsure about a game, the teacher should look over the game or the website and determine if it is appropriate for the age group.

12 Curriculum-Based Measurement This test is a way for teachers to see how their students are doing in the basic subjects. Such as Reading, Math, Writing and Spelling. It is very helpful to parents in that it provides the information of how their child is doing in these areas weekly.

13 Curriculum- Based Measurement Cont. If the student is not grasping the concept of the content and it is showing poor work, the teacher can then change the way they teach the student. A teacher can change the way they teach a student. They can provide longer instructional time. They can change the way present the materials to the student also.

14 Curriculum-Based Measurement Cont. The teacher can change the way she has their students in groups. The student is tested is administered weekly and the test lasts roughly 1 to 5 minutes for each student. The student may be required to read aloud to whomever is giving the test, and they will monitor their fluency of their reading. They will also be able to monitor the speed of their reading as well.

15 Why should someone use CBM? This test is helpful to the student, the parents and the teachers. Using this test, it will be able to provide you with more to talk about during conferences.

16 CBM Pictures This graph is for reading a story or a list of words. The way the graph is show is by monthly and shows the amount of words this student has correct.

17 CBM Picture This is a CBM test. As we can tell it is a math test of division, multiplication, addition and subtraction.

18 Dynamic Assessment DA is a way of testing a language test that identifies the skills that the student can obtain. It is also a way of identifying how well the student will learn. This assessment is very active and has a lot of process.

20 DA Cont. The DA looks at an individual students ability to obtain skills. In Dynamic Assessment the skill is tested, then it is taught and finally it is tested again. When clinicians are administering the test they use picture for the story. The teacher can also use dolls, costumes or toys during the assessment.

21 DA Cont. If the student does not voluntarily give answers, this will be very useful. Also if the student doesn’t interact with the administrator this information will be useful for the conference.

24 Learning Journals/Logs Is also known as a reflective journal. It is information that student write down of what they have learned, what they are confused with, what they are struggling with and what they need help with.

25 Learning Journals/Logs Cont. This is also a way for students, parents and teachers to keep track of the progress that the student has made. In the journal a person can write key points that they found in their reading. Questions that they have.

27 Reading Journals Students can write down vocabulary words, interesting quotes, charts and diagrams.

28 Personal Journals Students can write what they like and do not like in the literature. How they feel. They can also write about how a story or event relates with their personal lives.

29 Learning Journals Students write down things they have learned from the story that they have read. They can also write down things from Science, Social Studies and other subjects.

30 Double Entry Journals Students write their prediction of what they think is going to happen. Then the students write what really did happen.

31 Free Writing Journals Students can write down anything they want. They can write what ever is on their minds, what they are having problems with. They can also write down comments. They can write down if they are having problems at home, with friends and family. The student won’t be graded on this.

32 Simulated Journals Students create a character and write how they feel, what they do, why they do it, when and where things happen.
