Global opium cultivation and production 4 Illicit cultivation of opium poppy increased in 2012 by 14%, reaching over 236,000 hectares (similar levels as in 2007) mainly due to increases in Afghanistan and Myanmar. In 2012 global illicit opium production was comparatively low (- 30% on a year earlier and almost 40% less than in 2007) due to low opium yields in Afghanistan which maintains its position as the world’s largest illicit opium producer (75% of total). Preliminary information from Afghanistan points to a further expansion of illicit opium cultivation in 2013 and higher opium production.
