Product Description Three step scanning process Drug barcode Patient barcode Nurse barcode Visual Alert when mismatch occurs System Saves Date/Time Size and # of Units Nurse’s Name Dose # of Total Generates labels with barcodes Easily viewable information and adaptable user interface
6
PDA Factors and Requirements Requirements Alphanumeric Keypad Barcode Scanning Capabilities Windows OS WLAN Capabilities Multicolor Display Speakers Factors Size of Display Weight and Size Processor Speed and Memory Environmental Sealing Durability/Drop Specs Battery Life Cost
7
Final Choice: Symbol MC50 Gathered information on all barcode scanning PDAs on the market Threw out models that did not meet requirements and minimum satisfaction in factor fields This left only three, and our project sponsor and company made the final decision
8
Barcode Label Printer Factors Size, Weight, General Appearance Print Speed/IPS (inches per second) Print Resolution/DPI (dots per inch) Print Width (maximum size of labels) Color versus Black/White Thermal Transfer versus Direct Thermal Cost
9
Final Choice: Intermec EasyCoder PC4 Wanted to keep hardware components consistent – unfortunately Symbol does not make barcode label printers Intermec was best choice because offered best combination of the factors and free label making software (a big expense otherwise)
10
Integration of Hardware
11
Final Outputs Confirmation/Rejection of administration Patient/Nurse/Drug barcode labels Auto-populated patient and drug records Future Considerations Billing Information Pharmacy Records

Current Status Completed GUI Structures for PC and PDA Steps for deployment to PC and PDA solved Barcode scanner functionality solved for PDA Accessing information from Access database on PC Remaining Accessing database from PDA Connecting to SQL Server Possible requirement to purchase SQL Server 2005 Manipulating data from database on PC version Programming process flow
13
Concerns and Prospects Required to buy SQL Server 2005 Possible use of trial version for prototype With successful connection to database, expected completion of prototype is 19 February
