2  South Carolina needed a flag to represent their colony  William Moultrie was asked by the Revolutionary Council of Safety to design a flag.  A palmetto tree was added to Moultrie’s original design after the Battle of Charlestown. Background Information

3  The first flag had a blue background to match the soldiers uniforms and a crescent moon to match their caps.  Later the word “Liberty” was added to the flag because the city Charleston was free.  The flag honors soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War. The Flag

4  On June 28, 1776 the British Attacked Fort Moultrie. The fort was Made of palmetto logs and the logs Absorbed the cannonballs.  A British shell ripped the South Carolina flag down. William Jasper ran Out in front of the firing cannonballs And put the flag back up. The Battle of Charlestown

5  The palmetto tree and crescent moon are popular in South Carolina and other southern states.  The University of South Carolina, Clemson, Francis Marion University, The College of Charleston, and the Citadel use the flag in their school colors.  Shirts, belts, shoes, and wallets all can have the state flag on them.
