3 The first flag was approved by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. The flag had 13 stars and thirteen stripes.

4 The American Flag The 13 stripes represent the 13 original colonies. The 50 stars represent the 50 states.

5 At first one star and one stripe was added for each new state. This is the flag the flew over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. It inspired the national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.”
