Nearly one-in-three 11-16 year olds has been deliberately targeted, threatened or humiliated by an individual or group through the use of mobile phones or the internet. Pupils with SEND are 16% more likely to be persistently cyber bullied over a prolonged period of time. Girls experienced twice as much persistent cyber bullying as boys One in five Year 6 pupils had been cyberbullied in last 12 months Beatbullying 2009 Eastern region ABA research 2009 (during Anti-bullying week)

6. www.hertsdirect.org Why don’t young people (and adults) tell?  Scared of making situation worse  They had been threatened not to tell  They feel ashamed about their own behaviour (often did not want to tell their parent/ carer/ teacher/ adult)  Worried it might be their fault and they would be punished  Think adults will take away the technology  Worried adults might not understand and be dismissive of Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying - Key advice for us all:  Keep your personal details private  ThinkB4Upost  Report any Cyberbullying incident and do not retaliate  Keep any evidence (copy & paste or printout)  Know how to keep yourself safe and promote/ model/ to your class and embed in the wider curriculum  For serious incidents report to the police Harassment Act 1997 Defamation Act 1996  Schools have legal duties to protect pupils and can regulate off site behaviour
