Cisco Unity uses a Microsoft approved and certified schema modification tool. Before Cisco Unity can be installed, the schema must be modified. Active Directory provides the following: Data is stored in a logical structure. Data is replicated. Replication can be administratively controlled. Active Directory and the Schema

Active Directory schema allows directory storage of user accounts, passwords, phone numbers, and so on. Cisco Unity uses a Microsoft approved and certified schema modification tool. Before Exchange can be installed, the Active Directory schema must be modified (forest preparation). Schema extensions allow Active Directory to store Cisco Unity data, such as location objects, recorded names, and DTMF IDs.

CUDN v1.1—1-4 Cisco Unity Uses Active Directory as the Directory and Database SQL/MSDE Cisco Unity Active Directory Each Cisco Unity server has its own SQL/MSDE database. Two-Way Directory Monitors As users and Cisco Unity objects are added into Cisco Unity via the System Administration tool or imported from Active Directory, they receive new voice-mail subscriber data. This information is written to the Active Directory, and all other Cisco Unity servers in the forest will receive this new subscriber data.

CUDN v1.1—1-5 Exchange 2000 or 2003 as the Mailstore Exchange 2000/2003 Each Cisco Unity system needs an Exchange partner server to home the Cisco Unity messaging account. This account is created during the Cisco Unity install. Cisco Unity uses the Exchange 2000 or 2003 personal information store for storing all voice-mail messages. The mailbox storage size may need to be increased, based on the amount of Voice messages that a user receives. (Mailbox storage size has been successfully tested at 2 GB.)

Message routing can be administratively controlled using routing groups. –Connectors between routing groups define when messages are routed. Message routing is independent of Active Directory sites and directory replication.

One Cisco Unity server is required per administrative group. One Cisco Unity server should not service more than one administrative group. What Are Exchange 2000 Administrative Groups?

CUDN v1.1—1-10 Exchange 2003 Two facts about Exchange 2003 that are relevant to the Unity design: Exchange 2003 operates like Exchange 2000 from the perspective of Cisco Unity. Exchange 2003 cannot be installed on the Cisco Unity server but may be the partner server.

Unified messaging means one directory and one mailstore. Active Directory adds ease of administration, replication, and logical structure. Directory replication enables Cisco Unity Digital Networking. Cisco Unity can use Exchange 2000 or 2003 as the mailstore.
