Solving Equations by Multiplying or dividing
Objectives: Write and solve one step equations with one variable by using multiplication and division
5
Solving Equations Yesterday we talk about solving equations and how we can add or subtract to both sides so state the same. Today we are going to use the same concept but we are going to multiply or divide. We are going to use two properties : Division Property of equality : we can divide both sides by a non zero number and the equation remain the same. Multiplication Property of equality: we can multiply both sides by a non zero number and the equation remain the same
6
Solving Equations Example 1 7= 𝑘 8
8 7 = 8 𝑘 we multiply by 8 both sides 56=𝑘 Check: substitute k for 56 7= 𝑘 = 56 8 7= 7
7
Solving Equations Example 2: 3m= 51 3𝑚 3 = 51 3 divide both sides by 3
* 𝑚=17 Check : substitute m by 17 3𝑚= =51 51 = 51
8
Solving Equations Example 3: 3 4 𝑚=36
𝑚 = multiply by reciprocal 𝑚=12 4 =48
9
Solving Equations Examples 4: 3 2 = 2𝑣 8
= 𝑣 8 multiply by reciprocal 24 4 =𝑣 6=𝑣
10
Writing and solving Equations
Write and solve the following equations Twice a number is 40. 2𝑥=40 2𝑥 2 = divide both sides by 2 *𝑥=20 The ratio of a number and 5 is 6 * 𝑥 5 =6 5 𝑥 5 =6 5 multiply both sides by 5 x = 30

Writing and solving Equations
3. Five times a number is 80 5𝑥=80 5𝑥 5 = divide both sides by 5 x = 16 4. Maria earned $10.50 per hour working at an ice cream shop. She earned $147 each week before taxes. Write and solve an equation to find the number of hours h she worked each week. 10.50ℎ=147 ℎ= =14

Writing and solving Equations
5. Jen use one fourth of her allowances in new clothes. Jen spent $80 in new clothes. How much is Jen allowance. 1 4 𝑎=80 𝑎 =80(4) multiply both sides by4 𝑎 =320
