Clive Rayner, Grants Officer Norfolk Community Foundation Funding for Community Transport

A registered charity based in Norwich Established 2005 Make grants across Norfolk We deliver a wide range of different Funds About Us

Local authorities Individual donors Norfolk 100 members Businesses (e.g. Victory Housing, Bernard Matthews, Scira Offshore Energy, Lovewell Blake) Government Other funders (e.g. Comic Relief, Big Lottery) Where does NCF funding come from?

Charities Voluntary & community groups Scouts and similar groups Parish and town councils Voluntary run pre-schools Village halls Parochial Church Councils Social enterprises What sort of groups can apply?

A valid constitution A management committee of at least three people A bank account with at least two unrelated signatures Annual accounts Relevant policies What do groups need to apply?

A two part application process –Part A - online application process for most funds. –Part B – further questions & checklist of supporting information in hard copy Guidance available on our website All funds work independently We can decide on the most appropriate fund for you Grant Officers may contact you to clarify any issues How do we work?

Improvements/repairs to community buildings Youth club running costs Luncheon clubs Volunteer costs Vehicle purchase or maintenance Equipment for scout groups. Support groups/services for people with a range of disabilities Running costs What sort of things are funded?

2011 - over 500 awards worth around £900,000 2012 - over 800 awards worth £4,000,000 Generally we are a small grant funder (less than £5,000) Occasionally we deliver larger funds How much is available?

We recognise the value of what you do but… We receive very few grant applications from community transport providers Why am I here today?

We recognise that accessing services is a major need in Norfolk We recognise the inadequacy of public transport Norfolk has a high proportion of older people needing such services Our panels tend to like projects involving volunteers Why would we fund your group?

All funders are oversubscribed (we received over 1,400 applications in 2012) Success rates can be low Incomplete applications may be rejected out of hand Weak applications are unlikely to do well But good applications have every chance Before you apply remember…

Read the guidance/criteria carefully Talk to us before applying Check you can supply all documents before starting Provide full answers – many are too brief Get somebody to review your application Learn from each application you make General tips

An application that is clear about: What you want to do How you will do it Why you want to do it (the need) When you will do it Who will benefit (including how many) What it will cost What difference it will make (the outcome) How you will know (monitoring) What funders want to see…

Help us by ‘painting a picture’ of your community and your project. What sort of things might you tell us? Vitally important for national funders Equally important …

Incomplete applications Applications which lack detail A lack of evidence of need Rushed applications Costs are not explained fully Not having read the guidance Not telling us about benefits to people Common mistakes
