7 Create a Law Texting and driving is a hot topic issue. There have been a number of accidents, including fatalities, where texting and driving were the cause. Your job today is to consider the information we discussed regarding the classification of crimes and the penalty ranges for those crimes (ex. State Jail Felony / 180 days – 2 year in state jail and a fine up to $10,000). On a single sheet of paper: Give your law a name (ex. The Eagle Law, Tiffany’s Law, etc.) Describe the offense (what actions constitute the breaking of the law) Write the classification of your crime (misdemeanor (A, B, C), felony (state jail, 3 rd, etc.) Write the punishment for your crime (it should correspond with the above classification as we discussed in class) Are there any enhancements that would increase punishment (ex. Texting in a school zone might increase the penalty) Then write a paragraph convincing your law makers why they should enact your law (why your law is important, why it will benefit society, why you believe in your law and why your punishment fits the crime)
