2 Why Do We Ventilate? Ventilation helps to promote a healthy, clean environment Designed to remove stale odours & replace with fresh air Prevent build up of excessive moisture & humidity Removes excessive C0₂ generated by humans & pets Therefore, when you are building your property, you must choose from one of the available options and make a selection that suits your build because of course, each house is unique. This is what is trying to be achieved by ventilating your property. The definition of ventilation is to replace stale air with fresh air and by doing so, creating a healthy, clean environment. This is the main reason for ventilation. To get rid of the stale air, odours and smells, from the kitchen and bathrooms, and bring in fresh air into the build. This is the secondary purpose of ventilation. Again, by extracting the moist, humid air from the kitchen and bathrooms this aids the prevention of condensation forming and mould growth occurring.

Rises from the ground Estimated 100,000 homes have a concentration above safe level 200Becquerel per m2. THESE ARE THE 4 MAIN PROBLEMS THAT CAN OCCUR IF A PROPERTY IS NOT ADEQUATELY VENTILATED. We’ve all seen this at some point, condensation forming on windows. The reason this happens is that condensation is produced. This happens in our daily routine, through cooking, cleaning, bathing, even breathing, all of these activities produces moisture. Now, during the day, when you’re home is warm the moisture is held within the air, but at night when it cools and you’re heating automatically goes off via the timer, the air starts to cool and the moisture will then be attracted to the coolest point of your home, which is normally the windows, but can be the gable end wall or your external doors for example. To put this into context for you, when you grab a cold can of coke from the fridge, it is dry, but if you leave it on a table for a couple of minutes, water droplets will naturally form on it. This is exactly the same scenario as the moisture we produce o a daily basis. This can become a real problem, as the moisture can seep into the window frames, the window sills and the surrounding walls and wall paper. Mould growth is another problem that can occur. When moisture settles on a surface, over time it can develop into mould which will look like black spots on the wall. Proper ventilation will prevent this. The worst case scenario would be when the mould growth actually penetrates the fabric of the build. This needs to be avoided as it could lead to costly repair work, again highlighting the importance of proper ventilation. We have all seen examples of this, mould growing in the corners of rooms, most people wipe it away and think the problem is solved, but its not, what you don’t see is what’s underneath this. The mould spores can and will penetrate the fabric of the build and can damage the paintwork and plastering, which is not desirable. This is a dust mite. With proper ventilation, as I’ve said, the air within the dwelling is cleaner. Because the air is clean, this reduces that number of dust mites as they cannot breed in that environment, but a lack of ventilation and their population will grow. There have been tests which show that the reduction of dust mites will help occupants who suffer from asthma and other respiratory problems. Adequate ventilation will also reduce the number of pollen particles in the air, which assists hay fever sufferers, and the level of pollutants in the atmosphere, again making it a cleaner, healthier place to live. This is an obvious one! If the ventilation does not work, then the smells and odours produced cannot escape, especially in today’s standard new build as they are being built to be very air tight and energy efficient. In old buildings they can escape through natural leakage points within the build like around the window and door frame, corners of walls, cracks in the ceiling etc. But with homes these days being built as air tight as possible, correct ventilation is essential to get rid of the odours and smells.

5 How Do We Explain Moisture In The Home?

6 What Is Condensation: How Do We Explain Condensation In The Home?
Always Coca Cola!!! Condensation is caused when moisture held in the air meets a cold surface like a window or wall and condenses into water droplets. When we Bathe, Breathe Cook & Clean we create moisture which results in condensation It often results in black mould growth on walls and other surfaces or you can see actual water droplets. It is usually worse in corners, on or near windows, in or behind wardrobes and cupboards. CONDENSATION - THE MAIN CAUSE OF MOULD GROWTH

When there is an internal wet area WITHOUT an openable window. When the air flow from the diffuser has to pass through two doors to reach a wet area.
