Cultural Traditions Russians The British The French The Japanese The Chinese

Time British people place considerable value on punctuality. If you agree to meet friends at three o'clock, you can bet that they'll be there just after three. Since Britons are so time conscious, the pace of life may seem very rushed. In Britain, people make great effort to arrive on time. It is often considered impolite to arrive even a few minutes late. If you are unable to keep an appointment, it is expected that you call the person you are meeting. Invitations “ Drop in anytime ” and “come see me soon ” are idioms often used in social settings but seldom meant to be taken literally. It is wise to telephone before visiting someone at home. If you receive a written invitation to an event that says “RSVP”, you should respond to let the person who sent the invitation know whether or not you plan to attend.

Perhaps the most cheerful holiday in Russia is the Pancake week (Shrovetide). This holiday is considered to come from pre-Christian times, when the Slavs were still pagans. In the old days Maslenitsa was for remembrance of the dead. So the burning of the figure of Maslenitsa means her funeral, and blini (pancakes) – coliphia. But with time the Russians longing for fun and entertainment turned the sad holiday into jolly Maslenitsa with blini - round, yellow and hot as the sun, sledding and horse sleigh riding, fistfights and mother-in-law chatting. The rituals of Maslenitsa are very unusual and interesting because they combine the end of the winter holiday rituals and the opening of new spring festivals and ceremonies, which were to promote a rich harvest.

quilted needleworks French quilted needleworks are no recent discovery, they have almost always existed. In the French southern region called Provence, the first whole-cloth quilts appeared in the middle of the 17th century. This kind of needlework was already known in Sicily in the 13th and 14th centuries. The cottons used to make boutis came from Egypt, China or India. French food Food of course plays a huge part in French culture and no event would be without a wonderful display of traditional French food for everyone to enjoy. Whether on a grand scale or just a family event, the traditions of France are celebrated with the very best of local ingredients, their home made recipes and fine fare.

Sakura The cherry blossom (sakura) is Japan's unofficial national flower. It has been celebrated for many centuries and holds a very prominent position in Japanese culture. There are many dozens of different cherry tree varieties in Japan, most of which bloom for just a couple of days in spring. The Japanese celebrate that time of the year with hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties under the blooming trees. Kimono The kimono ( 着物 ) is a traditional Japanese dress. In modern day Japan, it is worn only sparingly or during special occasions such as weddings, tea ceremonies, formal traditional events and funerals. An appropriate style and color of kimono is to be worn depending on the occasion and the person's age and marital status.

Chinese parties In Chinese culture, you are supposed to share your happiness with others. If something worth celebrating happens in your life, you will want to share the joy with your friends and family. There are several common events that are generally celebrated with such meals. The wedding banquet is the most common. Similar celebrations are held after having a child when he is one month old (after the one month rest period mentioned above) and often times again when he is one year old. Smaller meals are held for closer friends after receiving a job promotion, buying a new house, or other similar glad tidings.
