Overview Photojournalism is a form of photography that creates an image in order to tell a news story. Photojournalism is different from other similar jobs because a photojournalist’s photos are both honest and impartial, while still telling a journalistic story that complies with the story the image is coinciding with. A photojournalist is similar to a writer because they are both exposed to obstacles such as physical danger, weather, or crowds.

What Types of Images? Photojournalists must be serious because their shots have to maintain the integrity of the original scene. Photojournalists must shoot only the facts, while still keeping the photos powerful to completely engage the viewer. Their goal is to make people interested in the news story. They must also try to capture the original emotion of the people and the scenes that they are shooting.

Different Objectives There are different ways a photojournalist can portray an image. They have different objectives for portraying certain images.

Objective #1 Images that contain the context of a recently published event.

Objective #2 Images that accurately represent events in both context and tone.

Objective #3 Images that combine with other news elements to create facts that the viewer can culturally relate to.
