Is Your IT Out of Alignment? Chargeback and Billing with Parallels Automation Brian Shellabarger, Chief Architect - SaaS

Parallels – Optimized Computing TM 2 The Enterprise Utility Computing Vision of 5 Years ago 1.IT Departments should be re-purposed as service providers 2.End-Users should be able to self-provision approved servers and services. 3.Departments should be responsible for the costs associated with their share of the data- center usage. …. So where are we now?

Parallels – Optimized Computing TM 3 How do today’s IT departments measure up Still not service-focused IT departments are reactive. Not proactive. End-users still wait too long Lots of leftover services Service lifecycle usually includes dozens of manual processes. Computing resources are over-subscribed or under- subscribed. IT departments are allocated budgets from the top, but nobody knows which departments are really spending the money.

Parallels – Optimized Computing TM 4 Enterprise: Key Challenges Today –Manual provisioning –Multiple disintegrated tools –Underutilized servers –Virtualization is largely manual –Unused services consume resources –Not clear how IT budget is spent –Ordering and approval takes long –IT resources invested in service maintenance –Unknown cost of provisioned services per business unit –Unknown cost of consumed resources per business unit

Parallels – Optimized Computing TM 5 The IT Department as a Service Provider 1.Deliver quality products and services based on customer needs 2.Manage Hardware and Software 3.Establish and enforce best- practices and standards 4.Bill customers for the resources they use. 5.NEVER LOSE MONEY! Real Service Providers Focus on 5 Key Elements:

Parallels – Optimized Computing TM 6 How do we get there? Complete Automation of IT Service Delivery and Accounting Parallels Automation

Parallels – Optimized Computing TM 7 Parallels Automation Provides… Full management of consolidated IT infrastructure ▪Allows for applications to be delivered in multi-tenant fashion through virtualization and automation capabilities ▪Fully Integrates all of the management tools and processes into a single web based management “portal” Automation of all key IT operations and functions ▪Provisioning/Re-Provisioning (complex multi step service creation) ▪Workflow (internal & external) ▪Usage, Chargeback and Billing (Automating Business Processes) Delegation of almost everything else ▪Control Panels – delegated browser-based multi-level self management: Provider > Reseller > Sub-Reseller >..> Customer Administrator > End-User Central IT > Division IT > Sub-Division IT >…> Application Administrator > End-User

Parallels – Optimized Computing TM 8 Parallels Automation: Best in Class Automation independent from virtualization strategy Focus on custom, low volume apps in data center Limited growth potential due to tactical nature of products Only company that ties virtualization and automation strategies together Focus on high-volume applications to get better ROI Meets immediate needs while delivering platform for future growth Other Automation Solutions Parallels Automation Solution

Parallels – Optimized Computing TM 9 Parallels Front-End Automation Multi-level Management Portals –Role-based access control –Pre-authorize users to perform some tasks on their own Request Portal –Users may go and request services and resources online Self-Service Portals –Customize service configuration –Request additional products or resources –Renew or terminate existing services Admin Portal –Perform all backend administrative operations Integrate with existing portals (e.g. helpdesk)

Parallels – Optimized Computing TM 10 Parallels Back-End Automation Product Catalogue Definition –Register resources and define products Service Request Portals –Configure multiple request portals and publish products Request Approval Workflow –Configuration of approval process with event-driven notifications Service Provisioning –Intelligent service placing per configuration/policy/availability Service Renewal or Decommission –Renewal request form or automatic decommission Replace each phase of Lifecycle with existing process

Parallels – Optimized Computing TM 11 Measuring Consumption Usage Accounting and Chargeback –Define rates for products and resources –Collect and store resource usage –Calculate service cost from various rates and usage history –Bill costs back to the departments Bandwidth Memory CPU Usage Disk Space Applications

Parallels – Optimized Computing TM 12 The Parallels Automation Service Catalog Service Gateways Resources Service Templates Service Plans Resource Rates

Parallels – Optimized Computing TM 13 Old Way Vs. Parallels Automation Old WayParallels Automation Service Ordering Departments call IT group to request new services or changes to existing services. Departments ask for status via email and phone calls. Departments go to online portal to order services: 24 x 7 Departments are kept up to date via online provisioning status and are notified when services are available. Service Provisioning IT Group performs many steps including manual configuration and scripts Service provisioning sequence is hard- coded Ordering system automatically calls provisioning system Provisioning scenarios are programmable and fully automated Centralized Administration IT group uses 20 different systems to provision/configure the services Users need to remember 20 different logins One system to provision any type of service Unified login allows to remember just one set of credentials and manage all systems Resource Administration Each department is allocated a budget for new hardware and licensing purchases. Resources become available after purchase, shipping, installation, and configuration. Departments allocate resources from an online control panel as resources are needed. Utilization reports provide accounting and cost allocation data. Passwords Each server / cluster has separate passwords. Administrators use terminal server and remember multiple passwords to access servers. Administrators log into a single control panel to administer all servers. Server level access not required.
