3 2014 MATE ROV COMPETITION Mission Scenario Location: Northwestern Lake Huron, Thunder Bay. More than 50 shipwrecks within the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (TBNMS). Scientist and conservation groups are needed. Map of the Great Lakes with Thunder Bay Map of Thunder Bay, highlighting the TBNMS and its shipwrecks 3

4 Mission Tasks Explore, document, and identify an unknown shipwreck. Collect microbial samples and measure conductivity of the groundwater emerging from a sinkhole. Remove trash and debris from the shipwreck and surrounding area. 2014 MATE ROV COMPETITION 4 Side and top view of ROV scanning shipwreck Zebra mussels engulf a shipwreck

33 33 Lessons Learned Manage your cost! -Funding and design should be simultaneously managed. -Mitigating high cost. -Switching material sizes. Teamwork! - Communicate and divide the project into portions. - Make sure everyone knows everyone else's job. Organization -Maintain to do lists between team members. -Meet deadlines placed on each other.
