 An auto mechanic is a mechanic with a variety of automobile makes or either in a specific area or in a specific make of automobile. In repairing cars, their main role is to diagnose the problem accurately and quickly. They often have to quote prices for their customers before commencing work or after partial dis-assembly for inspection. Their job may involve the repair of a specific part or the replacement of one or more parts as assemblies.  Basic vehicle maintenance is a fundamental part of a mechanic's work in modern industrialized countries, while in others they are only consulted when a vehicle is already showing signs of malfunction. Preventative maintenance is also a fundamental part of a mechanic's job, but this is not possible in the case of vehicles that are not regularly maintained by a mechanic. One misunderstood aspect of preventative maintenance is scheduled replacement of various parts, which occurs before failure to avoid far more expensive damage. Because this means that parts are replaced before any problem is observed, many vehicle owners will not understand why the expense is necessary.

College of the north Alantic School of Industrial Trades Program Length: Nine Months Start Date: September Offered At: Bay St. George, Gander, Prince Philip Drive Continuous intake may be available for this program at one of the above campuses. Please contact us prior to applying to ensure that this program is available for continuous intake at your campus.

Industries of Employment: Repair and Maintenance Transportation Equipment Manufacturing Motor Vehicle and Parts Dealers Occupational Categories: Automotive Service Technicians Automotive Mechanical Installers and Servicers Motor Vehicle Inspectors and Testers Admission Requirements Applicants for this training must be registered apprentices in the Automotive Service TechnicianTrade

 BCIT  This 30 week entry-level program provides you with the basic knowledge and practical skills needed for entry into the automotive industry. As a graduate, you could pursue a career as a general repair technician or choose to specialize in one of the varied career paths that have emerged within the industry. You will also receive credit for your first level of apprentice technical training from the Industry Training Authority (ITA) and 450 hours credit towards your time in trade. Upon successful completion of this program, you will be scheduled to write the Provincial Level 1 apprenticeship exam.

 Sockets: Sockets are available in various depths or lengths, often divided by most manufacturers into two categories of "standard" and "deep" according to the ANSI or DIN standard they are made to and the tolerances allowed by those specifications for each length of socket. Because the standards allow for some flexibility in tolerances, it is common to see two manufacturers make Deep sockets of the same size but with slightly different depths even though both meet the same specification. Standard length, otherwise known as "shallow" sockets, have a lower profile and allow a user to access nuts in narrow spaces. Deep sockets are useful for turning nuts onto bolts when the bolt extends upwards into the socket

 Ratchet: A ratchet is a mechanical device that allows continuous linear or rotary motion in only one direction while preventing motion in the opposite direction. Ratchets are widely used in machinery and tools. Though something of a misnomer, "ratchet" is also often used to refer to ratcheting socket wrenches, a common tool with a ratcheting handle.

 Breaker bar  A breaker bar is a long non-ratcheting bar that is used with socket wrench style sockets. Breaker bars are used to 'break loose' very tight fasteners because their additional length allows the same amount of force to generate significantly more torque than a standard length socket wrench.

 Torque Wrench  A Torque Wrench is a tool for setting and adjusting the tightness of nuts and bolts to a desired value.

 Pliers  Pliers are pincers with parallel, flat, and typically serrated surfaces, used chiefly for gripping small objects or bending wire.

 Vise-Grips  Vise-grips are Locking pliers, Mole grips (Mole wrench) or Vise-Grips are pliers that can be locked into position, using an over-center action.

 Combination Wrench  A COMBINATION WRENCH is a wrench with one open end and one socket end.

 Oil Filter Wrench  An oil-filter wrench is a tool for removing spin- on type oil filters. These filters are smooth, cylindrical canisters with knurling on the bottom that are difficult to grip, especially when they are oily.

 Impact Driver  An impact driver is a manual or power tool that delivers a strong, sudden rotational and downward force. In conjunction with toughened screwdriver bits and socket sets, they are often used by mechanics to loosen larger screws (bolts) and nuts that are corrosively "frozen" or over-torqued.

 slip-joint pliers  slip-joint pliers are pliers with a slot in one jaw through which the other jaw slides, permitting an adjustable span.

 Needle nose pliers  Needle-nose pliers (also known as pointy-nose pliers, long-nose pliers, pinch-nose pliers or snipe-nose pliers) are both cutting and holding pliers used by artisans, jewelry designers, electricians, network engineers and other tradesmen to bend, re-position and cut wire.

 Diagonal Cutter pliers  Diagonal pliers (or wire cutters or diagonal cutting pliers or diagonal cutters) are pliers intended for the cutting of wire (they are generally not used to grab or turn anything). The plane defined by the cutting edges of the jaws intersects the joint rivet at an angle or "on a diagonal", hence the name.

 Channel Lock pliers  Tongue-and-groove pliers—also known as water pump pliers, adjustable pliers, groove- joint pliers, arc-joint pliers, Multi-Grips, tap or pipe spanners and Channellocks—are a type of slip-joint pliers. They have serrated jaws generally set 45– to 60-degrees from the handles.

 Snap Ring Pliers  Circlips are designed to be removed with special circlip pliers (snap ring tool US) which can be reassembled for internal or external clips, but in field expedient situations, a pair of needle-nose pliers (for internal clips) or leverage with a flat-headed screwdriver (internal or external) are sometimes used.

 Feeler gauge  A feeler gauge is a tool used to measure gap widths. Feeler gauges are mostly used in engineering to measure the clearance between two parts. They consist of a number of small lengths of steel of different thicknesses with measurements marked on each piece.

 Utility knife  A utility knife is a knife used for general or utility purposes. The utility knife was originally a fixed blade knife with a cutting edge suitable for general work.

 Allan wrench  an L-shaped metal bar with a hexagonal head at each end, used to turn bolts and screws having hexagonal sockets.

 Screwdrivers  a tool with a flattened, cross-shaped, or star- shaped tip that fits into the head of a screw to turn it.

 Socket extension  A snap together piece to extend a socket to various different lengths

 Flex/Universal Joint for sockets  A Flex/Universal Joint is a snap on piece to make a socket more versitile and better for fitments in tight spaces, due to its movable components.

 Stubby wrenches  Short verson of a combination wrench

 Micrometer  a gauge that measures small distances or thicknesses between its two faces, one of which can be moved away from or toward the other by turning a screw with a fine thread.

 Air Ratchet  a mechanism that consists of a bar or wheel having inclined teeth into which a pawl drops so that motion can be imparted to the wheel or bar, governed, or prevented and that is used in a hand tool

 Air Impact Gun  An impact wrench (also known as an impactor, air wrench, air gun, rattle gun, torque gun, windy gun) is a socket wrench power tool designed to deliver high torque output with minimal exertion by the user, by storing energy in a rotating mass, then delivering it suddenly to the output shaft.

 Pry Bar Screwdriver style  a tool consisting of a metal bar with a single curved end and flattened points, often with a small fissure on one or both ends for removing nails

 Hand Operated Vacuum Pump  A vacuum pump is a device that removes gas molecules from a sealed volume in order to leave behind a partial vacuum.

 Compression Gauge  A gauge that threads into a sparkplug hole of a engines head and shows the compression of the engine in psi.

 Jack/Jack-Stands
