ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I ARCH 201 1st cycle, (Bachelor of Architecture) Spring, 2015

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I ARCH 201 Course introduction 1 The design process comprise seven stages: THE DESIGN PROCESS

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I ARCH 201 Course introduction 2 Establishing what the problem is. STAGE 1 - DEFINE THE DESIGN BRIEF The brief checklist: Do you understand what the client is asking for? Does the client understand what they are asking for? Do you agree on the definition of terms? Does the brief have any flaws? Can you manage client expectations?

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I ARCH 201 Course introduction 3 Assignment one - CUBE_UNIT FOR TWO - For this design exercises students are required to design a single architectural element – a housing unit for two people within given dimensions. The major focus of this assignment is on adequate spatial and functional distribution of the residential program on a restricted area and on essential design principles of the residential architecture. Students will be given possibility to choose between 3 different shapes and dimensions of the unit and three different roof types to apply on the chosen geometry. The technique of spatial diagramming and functional program will be introduced. Special attention will be given to functional disposition of the spaces inside a "cube” and design and materialization of the unit’s envelope. Design techniques paired with this assignment include orthographic projections (floor plans, sections and elevations), axonometric drawing, diagramming and physical model. This assignment will be done by hand on 4 A3 paper boards in scale 1:50. The duration of this assignment is 4 weeks and in week 5 students are expected to present their work. This will be a marked presentation.. STAGE 1 - DEFINE WHAT? – a housing unit WHO? – for 2 people WHY? – to create adequate spatial and functional distribution

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I ARCH 201 Course introduction 5 OBJECTIVES: STAGE 1 – DEFINE Who is your target group? What are the needs of your target group? Where and how will your design be used? What are the materials to be used? What is the budget of your client?

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I ARCH 201 Course introduction 6 Collecting background information about the following: STAGE 2 - RESEARCH THE USER – try to build a mental model of the potential user

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I ARCH 201 Course introduction 7 Collecting background information about the following: STAGE 2 - RESEARCH SIMILAR PROJECTS – create reference projects folder

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I ARCH 201 Course introduction 8 Collecting background information about the following: STAGE 2 - RESEARCH SIMILAR PROJECTS – create reference projects folder

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I ARCH 201 Course introduction 9 CHECKLIST: Do you understand the profile of your target group? What is the educational level of your target group? What is the typical lifestyle of your target group? What are the aspirations of your target group? STAGE 2 - RESEARCH TARGET GROUP What do you like about chosen reference projects? What are the types of spaces that have been used? What are the materials/envelope/openings that have been used? PROJECTS

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I ARCH 201 Course introduction 10 STAGE 3 - IDEATE Creating potential solution. Ideation methods include: Brainstorming Sketching different proposals Adapting a tried-tested design Taking analytical approach that focuses on the user

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO I ARCH 201 Course introduction 11 STAGE 4 - PROTOTYPE Resolving solutions. Ideation methods include: Brainstorming Sketching different proposals Adapting a tried-tested design Taking analytical approach that focuses on the user
