3 1903 Creation of the Department of Statistics (DoS) which was a division within the Customs Department primarily charged to collect and compile foreign trade statistics. 1932: the DoS was affiliated to the Economic Committee which was transformed into the Department of trade and Economics. 1953: the DoS separated from the Department of trade and Economics to become an independent affiliated to the Ministry of Social Affairs Historical background of CBS

5 The manufacturing industry sector is one of the pioneer sectors in the Sudanese economy it contributes with an appreciable proportion to the gross national products and it provides opportunities of employments,knowledge and training for great proportion of manpower in the country,the significance of this sector has increased after the adoption,by states of effective economical policies and prgrammes.the exploration and exploitation of oil in Sudan has had a noticeable impact in this sector Introduction and background of the survey

Provision of strong statistical base for government policies regarded to the industrial sector, and for businessmen in their respective industrial sud – sectors and decision- makers in public and private sectors 2. Determination of the size of industrial sector and its contribution in the national economy 3. Provided data used to generate a scientific methodology for computation of industrial accounts. 4. Conducted of the survey help strengthen local capability building efforts through training courses workshops and field work. Objectives of the survey

7 The CIS provided an important statistical database, which was help in the provision of information needed by decision makers industrialist,etc. And this done through provision of detailed data about :  The size of the industrial sector and its distribution according to the type of industry,classified according to the international standard industrial classification version 3(ISIC3).that is in term of number of industrial establishments and their geographical distribution.  Data on production capacity,total output of industrial sector, value added and its contribution in GDP.  Data on raw materials (input) used in the various industries,their types and sources (local or imported)  Data on fixed asset and its distribution according to the type of industry. 10 The first stage of comprehensive industrial survey was implemented by CBS. In this stage all manufacturing establishments in Sudan were enumerated and registered in order to prepare the comprehensive frame for all industrial establishment existing in Sudan. The enumeration process was also based on some earlier frames together with a number of other sources that include federal ministry of industry,CBS,Khartoum states,union of businessmen and Union of industrial chambers and commerce. 12 The number of industrial establishments enumerated in first step was 25161 distributed by the number of employees as follows: o 1563 industrial establishments each employed10 or more employees o 23252 industrial establishments each employed less than 10 employees o 211 industrial establishments stopped working o 135 industrial establishments in each of which the number of employees was not specified The updating process of the frame was completed during the field work in the second stage of the survey. 13 The questionnaire was most suitable tool for data collection from the establishments,it was designed by specialized experts to cover all required data in accordance with the objectives of the survey,the questionnaire was obtained from UNIDO, and reviewed and translated into Arabic by technical committee, some adjustments were made on the standard questionnaire to fit with the status of the industry in Sudan. 18 The main results of CIS :  From all functional establishments 93% were small one and 7% belonged to the larger one.  96.2 of all establishments were privately owned and there was no foreign ownership in small establishments.  1.5% of larger establishments were owned by foreigners  Sectoral structure of manufacturing industry was not diversified  82 of total establishments were found in only two sectors 70% found in food and beverages and 12%in metal products Summary of CIS Results Analysis

19  Industrial establishments were not equally distributed in the country.  Total contribution of industry in entire work force in Sudan amounted by 1.7 employees were employed in industry including owners of establishments,unpaid family members working without wage.  Higher compensation was found in oil refining industry. 20  The sectoral distribution of gross product of all establishments showed that there were only two industry ( food and oil refining.  Large establishments group contributed by 84 of total value added achieved by manufacturing industry.  The production capacity of materials for total industry was 56.2% of gross out put, this means intermediate consumption was relatively high.
