3 Pre Employment Screening - Facts
Everyone has had employees steal from them! Who runs background checks today – less than 50% of non governmental businesses. Based on my years in the industry I would say it is safe to say that anyone who has been in this business for more then a year or two has dealt with employee theft. Question – Can everyone in the room who has had an employee steal from them please raise their hands?

4 Pre Employment Background Checks
Three reasons why every employer should be running a pre employment background check? 1. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates that employee theft may cost American businesses as much as $50 billion on an annual basis. The Chamber has also reported that 30 percent of small business failure is caused by employee theft and estimates that 75 percent of all employees steal once and one-half of those steal a second time. 2. Negligent Hiring Lawsuits – this means that if you hire someone who harms a customer or employee and it then found out that the person has a prior history of assault or battery the business owner can be held liable. 3. "Employers are hot targets for theft because workers know their systems, controls and weaknesses, and they can bide their time waiting for the right opportunity," The Wall Street Journal.

5 Pre Employment Background Checks
The three reasons why most employers don’t run background checks! 1. They think that they are difficult to run, take too much time and cost too much money 2. They are not sure of the rules and regulations / they do not know they are allowed to run background checks 3. Owners don’t realize just how effective they are in identifying people with criminal histories – Thousands of repeat offenders would never be hired if a background check was run on them.

6 The Truth about Pre Employment Background Checks
A background check via ROG can be run securely online in less then five minutes and at a very reasonable cost. Many initial results can be returned in less than one hour and comprehensive search results within one to three days so there is no significant delay in making a hiring decision. What is the cost of making a bad hiring decision Monetary loss of what was stolen (may or may not ever be recovered) Time lost to dealing with the police and courts Expense of hiring a new employee and training them Scheduling be it you or your other staff filling in shifts until a replacement is hired

7 Screening Levels By Position
Each area of a business and in some cases each position requires a different background screen to be run to properly review an applicant for the sake of today’s conversation we will be reviewing: Retail Office Transport Dealer

8 Search Component Discussion
Social Security Number Name & Address Nationwide Criminal (44 states) Nationwide Sex Offender State / County Search MVR Employment Credential / Licensing Education Workers Compensation Credit Check Drug Testing Personality Assessments

9 Retail Clerk Screen – A basic nationwide criminal search Manager Screen – A basic nationwide criminal search plus possible credit check and employment history Supervisor Screen – A basic nationwide criminal check, employment history, and MVR The average clerk makes under $10 per hour How does someone pay their bills on this? How many people are looking for their free big payday Pressure from friends

10 Office These searches depend much more on the role that the applicant would be filling and could be as simple as a basic employee screen for a receptionist to a full criminal, education, drug testing, and personality assessment for a new management level applicant. Have you ever hired someone but once they came onboard they did not live up to expectations Have you ever hired someone only to have them not be able to interact well with others in the office

11 Transport Someone driving a company vehicle that is potentially loaded with thousands of gallons of gasoline need to be fully reviewed – lets take a minute to think about the recent airplane incident that occurred in Europe. Criminal MVR Drug Testing Personality Assessment DOT mandated random drug testing and post accident testing Consortium or not

12 Dealer A dealer is an investment in time and money and to do everything possible to ensure this is a good use of both is very important Criminal – nationwide criminal with state / county if necessary Credit – available with FICO score

13 Drug Testing Drug testing has many options and ways it can be addressed Saliva – Very limited value of information as the drugs only show up for a short period of time but least expensive and easiest to do onsite Urine – Industry standard with a longer information / window for testing Hair – The best method possible but also the most expensive and usually longest to return results Questions: Onsite or at a testing facility MRO or Not Discuss how quickly the drugs break down with the various search options

14 Personality Assessments
What is a personality assessment and how can it help you? Hiring decisions / Role within the organization Better internal communication Examples of Assessments Offered: Honesty & Integrity Customer Service Skills & Capabilities Integration Within An Organization Tell personal story about how I came to believe in assessments

15 How to choose the correct vendor
Services offered – Do they have the full range of searches you are looking for or will you need to use multiple vendors? Insights and information – Will they just sell you searches or help you design a program and make sure you are aware of state and nationwide laws that change over time as well as new search options? Customer service – US based help desk staffed with a team who really knows the screening industry and can give you insightful feedback and help. Turnaround time – While a quick turnaround is important for some searches remember sometimes quality data / information takes some time and effort. Price – Being competitive is important but also don’t forget you get what you pay for and often the cheapest price point gives you the least useful information.
