12 Why Invest in Technology?
Increase Productivity Reduce Costs Protect Data Before we take a closer look at Riverbed technology just for a moment let’s look at the question of why businesses spend money on technology in the first place. Typically we see “why” falling into three areas – its either to increase productivity to the benefit of the business, to reduce the costs of doing business – and to protect data that is valuable to the business. 12

13 Riverbed – Critical to Enterprise Success
Bandwidth Optimization Application Acceleration Increase Productivity Reduce Costs Consolidation & Virtualization Protect Data In each of these areas there are areas where Riverbed can help. To help increase productivity Riverbed delivers application acceleration – which at the same time helps increase user satisfaction and drive greater collaboration – and can make the difference in success when rolling out new applications. Riverbed delivers bandwidth optimization to help reduce your networking costs and increase available capacity for applications that run the business. We can also help you with your consolidation initiatives as you centralize IT to eliminate redundant infrastructure and lower costs – which also helps you simplify management. And as you look to leverage virtualization within your IT environment Riverbed can help you gain greater flexibility and standardize configurations – and further reduce costs as with consolidation. And finally in the area of data protection and disaster recovery, Riverbed is able to help deliver greater resiliency of operations – and to help you protect against data loss or interruption of service – and meet legal requirements in safeguarding valuable corporate data. Disaster Recovery 13

14 A B C D Riverbed – Critical to Enterprise Success Bandwidth
Increase Productivity Reduce Costs Protect Data Disaster Recovery Application Acceleration Bandwidth Optimization Consolidation & Virtualization A B C One way we like to articulate these Riverbed advantages is to take them one by one as A-B-C-D. Application acceleration Increase user satisfaction and collaboration Roll out new applications Bandwidth optimization Reduce networking costs Increase available capacity for applications Consolidation Centralize and simplify management Reduce costs by eliminating redundant infrastructure Virtualization Gain flexibility and standardize configurations Further reduce costs as with consolidation Disaster recovery Provide resiliency of operations Protect from data loss or interruption of service Meet legal requirements D 14

15 A B C D Riverbed – Critical to Enterprise Success
Application Acceleration Dramatically faster response times Improved user productivity Hundreds of apps from Citrix to SharePoint B Bandwidth Optimization Optimize your WAN Do more with less Reduce WAN traffic by 60-95% C Consolidation & Virtualization Consolidate servers from branch to datacenter Consolidate servers at branch LAN-like performance access In the area of application acceleration Riverbed technology helps deliver faster response times across hundreds of applications – and more than any other WAN optimization provider can help drive user productivity. Riverbed helps optimize your Wide Area Network – essentially letting you do more – much more – with less – in fact, we can help you reduce your WAN traffic significantly – typically 60-95%. In the areas of consolidation – and leveraging virtualization – as you consolidate servers from the branch to the datacenter, Riverbed technology helps these efforts be more effective – helping you consolidate in the datacenter but also the branch while delivering LAN-like performance in accessing data and applications across the WAN. In DR we can help you backup and recover in less time – and do this for branch offices without significant impact to your Wide Area Network – ultimately helping you deliver higher levels of service – enabling better RTOs and RPOs. D Disaster Recovery Backup (and recover) in less time Little impact to WAN Achieve RTO and RPO objectives 15

16 Technology Advantage: Application Streamlining
USERS NETWORK DATA CENTER VIRTUALLY ELIMINATE APPLICATION LATENCY Steelheads intercept and complete transactions locally Net result – 65-98% reduction in WAN round trips Application Streamlining No other vendor has as many application optimizations (16 and growing) Member of Microsoft’s Protocol Optimization Licensing Program (POLP) Riverbed Strengths Virtual Desktops (VDI) – Eliminate key stroke jitter, improve end user response times 30-50% 44X SharePoint performance improvement Examples From the application perspective then, lets look at the problem. As users across a Wide Area Network interact with applications that are running in the data center, latency can have a significant impact on the user experience. Applications are what we call chatty – requiring a lot of back and forth between client and server to operate. When there is latency on the WAN, these excessive round trips translate into a degraded – slow – user experience which ultimately can render an application useless. With Riverbed, Steelhead appliances understand the application protocol and behavior and will complete transactions locally – delivering a reduction in WAN round trips from 65-98% greatly improving the speed of the application and the overall user experience. No other vendor has as many application optimizations – Riverbed has 16 of these integrations – and growing. We work closely with apps and vendors – for instance Riverbed is a member of Microsoft’s Protocol Optimization Licensing Program. Just to give you a couple of specific examples – across the WAN Virtual Desktops or VDI is one of those apps that has challenges when encountering latency. With Steelhead we help eliminate key stroke jitter and improve end user response times up to 50%. With SharePoint – another application that when remotely accessed is impacted by chattiness and latency, Steelhead has proven to increase performance up to 44x.

17 Application Streamlining Overcomes Application Protocol Limitations
Request Optimized WAN Transfer WAN DATA CENTER BRANCH OFFICE Steelhead completes transaction locally Steelhead completes transaction locally Here is an illustration of this capability. Application Streamlining enables the central steelhead to act as a client and request data from the application server. This eliminates typical back-and-forth over the WAN and contains it to the LAN, where transactions are always very fast. The net effect is 65-98% reduction in WAN round trips 17

18 Technology Advantage: Data Streamlining
USERS NETWORK DATA CENTER Data DE-DUPLICATE DATA Byte level data deduplication is bi-directional Works across protocols and apps Packet mode optimization for UDP and TCP IPv6 Data Streamlining Single instance Data Store scales linearly, providing industry leading scalability Appliances auto-discover one another on the network Riverbed Strengths Cut Video on Demand bandwidth by 95% Virtual Desktops (VDI) – Deploy twice and many desktops without adding bandwidth 60-99% reduction in WAN bandwidth needs Examples The second area of optimization delivered by Steelhead appliances is Data Streamlining – also known as Scalable Data Referencing or SDR. Here, data flowing through the Steelhead appliances is deduplicated in both directions to eliminates the transmission of redundant data across the WAN. Deduplication works across protocols and applications, meaning for example if users are interacting with data – lets say a PowerPoint file that is housed in SharePoint – and another user is also sending the same PowerPoint via , the Steelhead appliance, working at the byte level, understands that this is the same data regardless of the application from which it is delivered – and in fact doesn’t need to send the bits again over the network. Only very small 16 byte references are sent to represent the data that has already been passed previously over the network. In the newest release of RiOS – the Riverbed Optimization Here, Riverbed provides a key differentiator in that our technology features universal Data Store for tracking the data that is passed back and forth – and does so without having to segment data by user – meaning every other user gains the benefit of having faster data access courtesy of bytes of data – and references – that have traversed the network in the past. In this way, the Steelhead data store scales linearly, providing industry leading scalability. And as you grow and add potentially new Steelhead appliances to the environment – the appliances will auto-discover one another on the network – making integration easy but providing the benefit once again of the universal data store – from the data center side Steelhead – to the newly established site.

19 Technology Advantage: Transport Streamlining
USERS DATA CENTER NETWORK OPTIMIZE TCP Optimizes TCP Payload Repacks TCP packets into optimal payload sizes Transport Streamlining TCP capabilities like HS-TCP and MX-TCP provide additional capabilities to significantly increase native throughput for all TCP applications Riverbed Strengths Virtual Desktops (VDI) – Maximize performance across small or congested links 20% faster cold file transfers e.g. 100MB media files Examples The next technology advantage area for Riverbed and Steelhead is Transport streamlining. Similar to the application chattiness issues, inefficiency with the TCP transport protocol across the WAN also impedes performance. Steelhead transport streamlining repacks TCP packets into optimal payload sizes to enable more efficient transmission of data across the Wide Area Network. Here Riverbed also features TCP enhancements such as High Speed TCP and Max TCP to help drive up throughput for TCP-based applications – such as VDI. Here the Steelhead appliance speeds even cold data transfers – meaning data that is net new and never before encountered by the steelhead devices – or data that is always unique such as media files.

20 Transport Streamlining Overcomes TCP Limitations
The net effect is a 60-98% reduction in TCP round trips WAN DATA CENTER BRANCH OFFICE Make TCP payload bigger 16KB to KB+ A basic challenge with TCP is that it can only send a small amount of information at a time. Transport Streamlining allows Riverbed Steelhead appliances to communicate over the WAN with optimal TCP settings, facilitating more efficient communications. In addition, Steelhead appliances repack each packet with references instead of raw data. That means each packet could carry virtual megabytes of data instead of the typical 16, 64, or 100 K of data. Repack payload with references From 100KB+ to Virtual 1MB+ References New data Data 20

21 Bandwidth Optimization
Data Reconstructed Files & Data Request Files & Data WAN DATA CENTER BRANCH OFFICE Requests go directly from the client to the server Here we look at this concept in more detail. Riverbed’s Data Streamlining uses a proprietary algorithm to break up the data into small referenceable data chunks and store them in the central Steelhead. The first time a file is sent through the network, all the data and reference links to the data are sent to the remote Steelhead. This is what refer to as a “cold send.” The cold send is still optimized with application and transport optimizations – so it will be faster even the first time the data goes across – however the real magic occurs the next time the same or similar data is requested. When this happens, the central Steelhead simply sends references to data that is already on the remote Steelhead. If parts of the data have changed, the Steelhead simply sends the chunks of data that have changed, with new references. The file is then very quickly reconstructed using a combination of the changed and unchanged data. Steelhead auto-intercepts response, and segments data “De-dupes” data so only new bytes compressed & sent over the WAN 16-Byte references represent megabytes of warm data Remote Steelhead reconstructs data and delivers it to the client Works bi-directionally, cross-protocol and across applications 21

22 Jack the IT Guy Here we look at this concept in more detail. 23 Optimize Bandwidth with Enhanced Control: QoS
Low visibility leads to bottlenecks AppFlow Engine identifies applications QoS can makes room for apps, video Video UDP Video WAN UDP Voice Voice Voice iTunes iTunes Port 80 WAN P2P P2P Port 80 Citrix Port 2598 Citrix Port 80 Business Web Business Web In RiOS 6.5, we introduced a new level of application-based QoS into the Steelhead product. The problem we are really resolving here was a low level of visibility causing bottlenecks in the system. With the App Flow Engine we use Deep Packet Inspection to identify all of the critical applications on your network, even those inside of HTTP port 80. For example, where we previously told you that you were getting 80% reduction across all of your HTTP apps, we are now able to distinguish whether those apps are SharePoint, Siebel, PeopleSoft (or whatever they may be) and then allow you to do innovative things like create Application-based QoS classes for them to guarantee bandwidth to critical apps and ensure that apps you want to restrict get restricted. 24 Consolidate Servers to the Data Center
Tape Backup BRANCH OFFICE Storage Tape Backup Filers DATA CENTER WAN File Servers Mail Servers Filers Mail Servers File Servers Web Servers MOBILE WORKERS Branch Office Consolidation Most branches still have many local servers Steelhead products enable consolidation of many of these servers to the data centers / private cloud Enables customers to cut IT costs and save money One of the trends in the industry that has in part lead to the success of Riverbed is Branch Office Consolidation. As many companies have grown either organically or via acquisition, IT infrastructure has proliferated across data centers and remote offices. One of the key initiatives many companies have undergone in recent years – spurred on by the flexibility afforded by server virtualization – is consolidation, that is, to consolidate servers and applications back from remote and branch offices into the data center where support and maintenance is simplified. As this happens, and as applications are accessed remotely, this is where Steelhead products come into play to enable the kind of performance that helps ensure the usability of applications from a performance perspective – and ultimately the satisfaction and productivity of users. Consolidation ultimately helps customers cut costs and save money across the board and Steelhead WAN optimization plays a big part in these initiatives.

25 Consolidate Servers within the Branch Office: Riverbed Services Platform
The Riverbed Services Platform provides the ability to run up to 5 virtualized servers on the Steelhead Appliance Virtualize branch offices Reduce infrastructure sprawl Lower IT support costs PRINT AD, DC, PRINT SERVER FIREWALL CUSTOM RICH MEDIA Riverbed Packages Along those same lines – customers realized that in some cases they need to still maintain services in the branch – this spans from things like DNS, DHCP and Active Directory but also extends to other solutions like security software and video delivery. Riverbed helps customers consolidate those services that will remain in the branch office – right onto the Steelhead appliance itself. The way that we achieve this is with a solution we call the Riverbed Services Platform – or RSP for short. RSP provides the ability to run up to 5 virtualized servers on the Steelhead Appliance itself. You can think of this as a branch offices box that lets you keep a minimum amount of hardware in the branch - in this case the Steelhead appliance which is essentially to branch WAN optimization already. This enables you to leverage that same platform to add even more value at the edge. With one box to support, Riverbed helps you keep a handle on infrastructure sprawl and again helps you lower overall costs. What you see on the bottom here are Riverbed partners who have certified their solutions to run on RSP. These solutions range from firewall and security software to video solutions that can be leveraged at the branch.

26 Disaster Recovery without WAN Optimization
Local backup in branch offices Expensive Unreliable Limited coverage Heavy administration Unprotected desktops & laptops WAN DATA CENTER Limited replication to recovery datacenter One more area to highlight to showcase the value of Riverbed Steelhead is in the area of Disaster Recovery. What we see in a lot of remote offices is that either backup is being done locally in the branch – or in some cases – and especially so w/ desktops and laptops – there is no protection. What tends to be the case either way is that these approaches can be are expensive – are unreliable – in other words, lucky to get a good backup – have limited coverage, as indicated there’s often a lot that is NOT backed up – and when there is some sort of protection in place, it tends to be heavy on administration. 27 Disaster Recovery with WAN Optimization
Protect branch offices across the WAN or consolidate IT to the datacenter Hardware & bandwidth savings Reliable & Resilient Comprehensive Automated Steelhead Appliance Backup desktops & laptops across the WAN WAN Steelhead Appliance Steelhead Mobile DATA CENTER Replicate all data to recovery data center When you add WAN Optimization to the mix – things start to open up. They open up and become possible because you can do things like efficiently back up across the WAN – or yet again consolidate things to the data center so you don’t have to back up in the branch. You can also use the same efficiency to protection desktops and laptops – something that was previously left unprotected due to difficulty and cost. And you can start to do things like replicate where it makes sense – for instance from the branch to the data center and from on data center to a disaster recovery site. Here, with Steelhead helping to streamline the transfer of data, you can achieve hardware and bandwidth savings – you can make these operations much more reliable, resilient, and comprehensive – and you can automate much of this now whereas before error prone operations made automation very difficult. The net here is that Steelhead devices make achieving a true disaster recoverability. DISASTER RECOVERY SITE Steelhead Appliance 27

28 A Steelhead for Every Need
Wherever your business leads, and wherever your data goes, Riverbed has a Steelhead solution to accelerate your business Steelhead Platforms Steelhead Appliances 1 Mb/s–12 Gb/s 30–1 Million TCP conn. Host up to 5 VMs Virtual Steelhead ESX/ESXi Based VMware management tools Cloud Steelhead Subscription Model Pay as you grow scaling Steelhead Mobile Per Connection Licensing Branch Site DR Interceptor Mobile Controller BRANCH OFFICE CMC WAN DATA CENTER MOBILE WORKERS Steelhead comes in different shapes and sizes depending on your needs and your business. Physical Steelhead appliances are available to support a wide range of network connections and configurations – and can even host virtual machines for branch offices. Virtual Steelhead runs on VMware ESX and lets you deploy WAN optimization directly within your virtual infrastructure. For those who are moving to cloud infrastructure – and specifically in the current case with Amazon EC2 – you can still gain the benefits of Steelhead optimization and do this on a pay as you grow basis – scaling with your needs. Steelhead Mobile is a software client version of the very same Riverbed Optimization System technology – in this case able to run on user systems and laptops as endpoints. Here you simply buy on a per connection basis. Let’s take a close look at each of these solutions in a bit more detail. PUBLIC CLOUD SECONDARY DATA CENTER

29 Cloud Steelhead Customer A Public cloud provider Riverbed Cloud Portal
Customer B Licensing & Billing Discovery Deployment Upgrades Configuration Contract Management Extend acceleration to Public cloud Subscription/up-front Pricing Models Tight integration into Cloud systems Quick customer spin-up times Simplified ongoing management Customer B Cloud Steelhead extends Riverbed Steelhead technology into the Amazon public cloud infrastructure – also known as the Elastic Compute Cloud or EC2. We’ve done interesting things to take into account the different use cases of public cloud deployments. The first is that Cloud Steelhead can use Amazon’s Elastic Block Storage or EBS for the Steelhead datastore used to track the unique deduplicated data across the environment and to use this by multiple cloud Steelheads. This helps from two perspectives 1) scalability and 2) high availability. The second difference is that Cloud Steelhead features enhanced redirection mechanisms. Unlike private environments, there is no natural intercept point for traffic in the public cloud. This means it is impossible to be ‘in-path’ to server the traffic of just on enterprise. Therefore we’ve introduced the Cloud Steelhead Shim to redirect traffic from participating servers to the right Cloud Steelhead. For simplicity, Cloud Steelhead users simply add add this shim to their standard Amazon Machine Images (AMIs). The other major component to point out here is ease of management. To facilitate this, Riverbed provides a Portal that lets you manage three main functions: Instance Management – This is used to easily deploy and upgrade Steelhead instances into the Cloud. Instead of a long, obscure 30-step process to get something up and running in the Cloud, instances can be deployed and managed in a few easy clicks. Licensing – Each Steelhead instance that loads in the Cloud requests an available license from the Riverbed Portal, and will use that licenses regardless of the location and underlying hardware that it is running on. This means that as automated provisioning occurs, the licensing moves fluidly throughout the transitions. Discovery – To ensure that there is an easy way to redirect the traffic into the Cloud Steelhead for optimization, we have created something called a Discovery Client. This is a lightweight shim that is loaded in Server AMIs and redirects traffic to the correct Steelheads, The Riverbed Portal automatically displays newly purchased Steelhead instances so that they can be immediately deployed into the Cloud. Cloud Steelhead features subscription-based pricing, providing one month, annual, bi-annual and tri-annual contract periods. This even extends the flexibility to burst traffic for a period of time. For example, you may need more bandwidth for a data center migration but want to drop it down again after a month – you can do this with Amazon and Cloud Steelhead. You can also expand on a physical steelhead deployment – but do it virtually in the cloud.

30 Virtual Steelhead No hardware virtual appliance
Built on RiOS, virtualized on VMware ESX/ESXi Identical features for WAN optimization as Steelhead appliances Requires WCCP / PBR for traffic redirection Retains all current technology advantages over the competition Virtual Steelhead as you can imagine is a virtualized offering of Riverbed Steelhead WAN optimization. It can be delivered independent of specific hardware – as it runs on VMware hypervisors – but the good news is that because it is built using the same technology that is inside ANY Steelhead offering, you get all of the current technology advantages. With Virtual Steelhead you gain the value of Steelhead capabilities and can deliver that in unique form factors. Some customers are on a mission to virtualize everything – and Virtual Steelhead enables them to continue on that path including WAN optimization. For others, Virtual Steelhead meets the need to fit into specialized hardware – for instance ruggedized military gear that is deployed into the field. Here, where links are over satellite channels, Riverbed technology is a key component, and so as manufacturers of such gear design systems, they can design in Steelhead technology as well to ensure system performance. Other examples of where this technology fits is in places where space is an issue – for instance news vans, or emergency response vehicles. Appliances Software Virtual

31 Steelhead Mobile – Complete Mobile Solution
Enterprise grade acceleration for SMB or smaller strategic mobile deployments Virtual package deployed in the Riverbed Services Platform on Steelhead Appliance Supports up to 100 concurrent active Mobile clients SMC – Virtual Edition SMC – Appliance Designed for large deployments and rapidly growing organizations Standalone appliance deployed in the data center. Supports up to 4,000 concurrent active Mobile clients Clusters for scale Mobile Workers Steelhead mobile delivers the optimizations of Steelhead in a software client that supports mobile users who need access to key centralized applications. Here there are two components – the client software piece itself that runs on either Windows or MAC – and then what we call the Steelhead Mobile Controller or SMC which manages Steelhead Mobile licenses and controls the deployment, management, and reporting of Steelhead Mobile client software. The SMC can be deployed either as a virtual edition – ideal for small to medium businesses or other strategic deployments that require the flexibility of a virtual machine install – or the SMC appliance which is targeted at large and growing deployments. The Virtual Edition of SMC is deployed in the Riverbed Services Platform on the Steelhead Appliance. This supports up to 100 concurrent active Mobile clients. For larger installations, a standalone SMC appliance is deployed in the data center and can support up to 4,000 concurrent active Mobile clients – and can also be clustered for scale and availability. Together, this enables a complete solution – all built on the same RiOS platform – that works in conjunction with Steelhead deployed in the data center and branch offices.

Make sure server is working Basics Passive health monitors (default) Monitors the real request Active health monitors Periodic checks Basic – Ping or Connect (TCP) Protocol specific – DNS, FTP, POP, SMTP, HTTP, HTTPS, RTSP and SIP Advanced – Client First, Server First, Full HTTP, Full HTTPS and External Program (example Perl script) Per-node or pool-wide Server Pool PING GET /index.html GET /health.jsp

44 Bandwidth management Why? Gold, Silver, Bronze
Service differentiation Gold, Silver, Bronze Better user experience Service bandwidth limitation Server bandwidth protection Bandwidth management class Max bandwidth Bandwidth sharing within class No sharing Per Traffic Manager Across all Traffic Managers sharing service Limits outbound traffic to users or servers Server Pool Virtual Server GOLD SILVER GET GET

45 Session Persistence – Sticky Connections
Why? Provides state to connection Typical use case is e-commerce shopping carts Persistence type Source IP Transparent cookie insert Monitor application cookie Monitor J2EE session id Monitor ASP/ASP.NET session id SSL session id Server Pool GET Virtual Server Many applications requires that all sessions from a user end up on the same server in the server pool. Typical application are e-commerce shopping cart information, etc. Session persistence classes are global and be assigned to one or more server pools. If you like to use the same persistence class for several virtual services you must make sure the information used for the persistence (cookie, source IP, etc.) are available in each virtual service. For example if you like to use the same persistence class for one TCP and one UDP service you need to use Source IP persistence as no cookies or SSL session ID are available in a UDP session. GET

46 SSL Offload Why? Basics SSL h/w accelerator support
Free CPU cycles on servers Allows for content based routing and/or cookie persistence for encrypted sessions Mutual authentication Basics SSL handshake using PKI SSL h/w accelerator support SSL bulk encryption using symmetric key encryption Always server authentication Based on trusted CA’s Optional client authentication Support for CRL and OCSP Server Pool GET Virtual Server GET

47 Content-based Routing – L7/URL Load Balancing
Why? Web site consists of several applications Use optimal server for specific content Virtual hosting Basics Use file extensions .html, .css, .asp, .jsp, etc. Use path information /images, /app1, /app2, etc. Use host information etc. Server Pool GET /service.asp GET /index.html GET /servlet.jsp Virtual Server GET /service.asp GET /index.html GET /servlet.jsp

48 Connection draining Why? Basics Non disruptive server maintenance
Allows for persistence sessions to keep working until “disabled” Server Pool

49 Redundancy and scaling
Why? ADC redundancy and scaling = Service redundancy and scaling Basics Beyond single ADC = Always cluster Active/Passive, Active/Active and n+1 Active/Passive Single Traffic IP per service Active/Active and n+1 Single-hosted Traffic IP Multi-hosted Traffic IP Server Pool Cluster

50 IPv6 support Why? Basics Native IPv4 or IPv6 NAT 46 or NAT 64
ISP’s are starting to provide IPv6 based Internet services Enterprises are starting to use IPv6 on parts of their internal network Basics Virtual servers listen on IPv4 or IPv6 Server pool can be a mixture of IPv4 and IPv6 Native IPv4 or IPv6 NAT 46 or NAT 64 Server Pool IPv4 IPv4 IPv6 IPv6 Virtual Server IPv6 Internet

51 HTTP multiplexing Why? Basics Offload TCP processing from server
Utilize the difference between LAN vs. WAN latency Multiplex ratios 1000:1 not uncommon Server Pool TCP GET Virtual Server GET GET

52 Content caching Why? Basics Optional SSD for large volumes
Offload content delivery from server Typically common static objects Basics Uses memory for object store Optional SSD for large volumes Honors caching settings from server by default TrafficScript used to override caching headers from server Server Pool image.gif Virtual Server GET /image.gif

53 Global Server Load Balancing
Why? Data center redundancy Users routed to closest data center Basics DNS based GLB algorithms (site selection) Location load Geographic (MaxMind GeoIP) Adaptive (default) Round robin Weighted random Active/Passive Recommended DNS TTL sec DNSSEC supported Dallas – Data Center London – Data Center DNS DNS DNS VS = DNS VS = HTTP VS = HTTP VS = Internet NS .demo.local NS .demo.local DNS DNS DNS GET DNS GET User is Brazil User is Germany
