Please come inside and explore the universe with us. WELCOME TO MS. LEE’S FifTH GRADE SCIENCE CLASS

Grade 5 Science TEKS (partial list)  Scientific Processes. The student uses scientific inquiry methods during field and laboratory investigations to collect samples to examine and organize, and will then evaluate information in order to draw conclusions.  Scientific Processes. The student uses microscopes, compasses, thermometers, balances, rulers, meter sticks, hand lenses, safety goggles, computers, cameras, and other scientific tools.  Scientific Concepts. The student knows the role of the sun, oceans, soil, and plants. The student understands changes in the weather, metamorphosis, objects in the sky, and the effects of heat on matter.  Scientific Concepts. The student understands simple systems and changes in systems.  Scientific Concepts. The student understands the comparison between living and extinct creatures and the adaptive behaviors of surviving organisms. The student understands the difference between inherited and learned characteristics.  Scientific Processes. The student constructs graphs, tables, maps, and charts.

The Scientific Process A hypothesis is an educated guess or prediction of what you think will happen. A hypothesis can be tested. A good hypothesis takes the form of “ If I do this, then that will happen.” For example, “I hypothesize that flower seeds exposed to sunlight will grow faster than those that are kept in darkness.” Materials are the substances or apparatus necessary for doing, studying, or making something. For example, “We collected the materials that we needed to complete the science experiment.” A procedure is a series of steps followed in a regular, definite order to accomplish something. For example, “ We followed the six steps in the procedure for building the model of a water molecule.”

The Scientific Process Observations involve looking at and studying something or an occurrence in order to make a record or give a description of the information obtained. Measurement with instruments is often involved in observations. For example, “our observations in science class will allow us to learn more about the world in which we live.” Conclusions are based on our observations, and they are our final decisions about our experiment. Conclusions are reasoned judgements about our observations. For example, “In our conclusions, we state whether or not our hypothesis was correct.”

Grade 5 Science Grading  Lab and Field Experiments  Individual/Pairs/Group Cooperation  Homework  Vocabulary/Spelling Tests  Content/Concepts Tests  Book Reports  Science Projects  Class Work: Science Journal
