1 HOW TO USE THE INTERNET AND THE WORLD WIDE WEB

2 1) Choose a web browser and become familiar with it. i.e. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, etc 2) Type URL into the address bar. i.e. http://www.zenome.com/

3 3) Recognize and understand the domains at the end of URLs. URL stands for Uniform Research Locator Locates where a web page is stored URL contains a server name and domain name Domains include:.org,.com,.net,.gov,.edu

4 4) Install appropriate plug-ins required for the browser to view and play multimedia. Audio, video, games, animation are multimedia Plug-ins are required to view multimedia They must be downloaded onto browser Examples are QuickTime, Flash, Shockwave, Java New versions are constantly made available

5 5) Navigate web pages by clicking on text links or hyperlink graphics. Websites contain one or more web pages Web pages are stored on servers Web servers located around the globe Web pages contain hyperlinks and hypertext Hyperlinks transfer to other related pages Hyperlinks can also be images or graphics

6 6) Learn to identify common web terminology. HTML: Hyper Text Mark-up Language ALL websites are some form of HTML Hypertext is the language of the web Hypertext can contain images and graphics Hyperlinks are references to hypertext Hyperlinks transfer to other documents

7 7) Determine whether a website is reliable and up-to-date. Not all information presented is accurate Conduct research before accepting the information Verify: Author’s credibility Publisher’s status Date and time of last update Site’s resources

8 8) Bookmark favorite websites for future reference. Bookmarking saves web pages into browser Pages can be sorted into folders Folders can be organized by user They can be accessed at any time Web is constantly changing Bookmarks are not updated

9 9) Use RSS to receive updates of regularly changing web content. RSS = Rich Site Summary It gives latest updates to a website Saves time by prioritizing what to read Spam-free No need for email subscription

10 10) Use the web to communicate with others, to share information and to exchange opinions. Web: system of interlinked hypertext documents Uses Internet as a medium to communicate Allows for viewing, sharing and exchanging information Contents are viewed using a browser
