ENGINEERING Academic Advising Fall 2013 1

AGENDA  Associate Degree in Engineering  Overview of Basic Requirements for Transfer for NON-ENGR majors:  Admission to CSU  Admission to UC  Transfer Requirements specific to ENGR  ASSIST.ORG for choosing courses  Applications  Employment information 2013 2

Disclaimer All advice given in these slides should be confirmed with a visit to your counselor Some students have to stay an extra year at MPC if they neglect a key transfer requirement such as English!! MPC Counselors are here to help! Use them! 3

Glossary Transfer – moving from MPC to University Hopefully with minimum course redundancy Hopefully with junior level status Admissions Requirements – classes you need to complete in order to be accepted for transfer Transfer Selection Criteria – classes (and other things) you need to be competitive, to be selected Major Requirements – need to be completed either at MPC or University to get BS degree 4

Glossary IGETC – General Ed Major Requirements for UC also accepted for CSU and MPC degrees lets you take all lower division Gen Ed at MPC Lower Division – Classes that are taken in Freshman/Sophomore year (MPC or University) Upper Division – Classes that are available only for Junior/Senior year (University only) 5

Still not sure ENGR is for you? Spring PERS 71 “Career Assessment” class 1 unit Myers-Brigg Personality Inventory Strong Interest Survey Help identify Career Paths that will work for you 6

MPC Associates Degree in ENGR: "Transfer Prep" Associate Degree in Engineering Requirements:  18 units from the core course list  “C” grade or better in each course  7 units from the Engineering Department  Reading/Writing Proficiencies (ENGL 1A)  Math Proficiency (MATH 20A)  Information Competency (LIBR 50 or test out)  12 units at MPC – (if you come in with credit)  60 transferable units  including CSU or UC (IGETC) Gen Ed Pattern  2.0 GPA 7

AA in ENGR Useful if you: a) don't want a BS b) are going to take a long time to get it c) are not entirely sure you will be able to complete the BS 8

New MPC Associate Program for Transfer—ENGR AS-T Result of SB1440 legislation "Degree with a Guarantee" Streamlined Associates degree for those wanting to transfer to CSU All CSUs will accept Some variations for EE vs CE vs ME etc Still being developed Probably available in 1 year 9

OK you want a BS in ENGR BUT: Are you Calculus Ready? NO: Engineering majors needing Basic Math Start on the Math sequence Take Gen-Ed classes to fill your schedule After Math sequence, if you are still on track Target major prep classes and institution (CS/UC) YES: Engineering majors and Calculus Ready Focus on major prep classes MATH, PHYS, CHEM, ENGR Don’t worry about Gen-Ed EXCEPT the core classes required for transfer  These requirements are very important, see counselor 10

OVERVIEW for NON-ENGR Transfer to CSU  You know you want to go to CSU: Admissions Requirement: Area A/Area B4 aka “The Golden Four” Major Requirement: 30 units of General Education SEE HANDOUT  60 transferable units (GPA: 2.0) 11

The “Golden Four” for CSU Core Gen-Ed classes for CSU Schools A1: SPEECH A2: ENGL1A Composition A3: Critical Thinking ENGL2 or PHIL6 or PHIL10 9 CSU campuses waive Area A3 for admission  Including SJSU, Cal Poly, Chico, Sac State, Fresno, SF  See page 16 of http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/casper.pdf http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/casper.pdf B4: MATH (any transferable MATH, 13 or higher) 12

Overview for NON-ENGR Transfer to UC  You know you want to go to UC 2 transferable English courses Transferable Math course 4 courses from: Humanities Social Sciences Science (at least two areas) 60 "UC transferable" units (GPA 2.4) IGETC for UC General Ed  13

Overview for NON-ENGR UC/CSU Not Sure  Applying to both CSU and UC? Take ENGL1A and ENGL 2 SPEECH required for CSU Some UCs require SPEECH For major not admissions Check on assist.org Follow IGETC for Gen Ed 14

Different Rules regarding Transfer for Engineering Students Since Engineering is High Unit Major, Focus shifts from Gen-Ed to Major preparation!!! (See www.assist.org)  CSU A3 exceptions for admission  critical thinking already embedded in courses  SJSU Not Requesting “Golden Four” for ENGR  IGETC generally not recommended for UC  Want you to get thru MATH/PHYS/ENGR etc Follow Admissions Criteria for CSU and/or UC Transferable units (60) 15

Also Be Aware Transfer Selection Criteria Many Engineering programs are impacted and also base admissions on GPA Major preparation grades MATH, PHYS, ENGR, CHEM Many students hurt their prospects by focusing on Gen Ed over Major Prep!! 16

ASSIST (www.assist.org) Identify articulated major courses at specific California universities Identify UC transferable courses at all California community colleges Identify placement of courses on CSU GE and IGETC for all California community colleges Identify CSUs and UCs that offer specific majors 17
