1 i>Clicker for Instructors Canvas Quick Start Guide 20150316

2 Canvas QuickStart Guide: i>Clicker Set Up WhoThis Tip Sheet is written for  Faculty  GTFs  Course Designers  Graders  Students WhenBefore the course begins. WhyThe UO currently recommends faculty who want to use clickers adopt "i>Clicker", a product originally developed at the University of Illinois and is now available commercially. We expect that individual students will buy their own clickers ("remotes"), typically from the Duck Store. The UO provides instructors with base stations ("receivers"), plus training and technical support. The i>Clicker system is very easy to use, inexpensive, and integrates well with other UO systems such as Canvas. In its first term at UO, fall 2008, it was used by more than 4100 students.

6 1. 1. Order clickers for your students to purchase We treat clickers just like textbooks. You'll want to place an order at the bookstore a month or more before the start of the term so your students can buy the clickers. The Duck Store (UO Bookstore) is well organized to handle i>Clicker orders. I>clicker 2 remotes are for sale for $50.05 new, and $38.00 use. The i>Clicker 1 remote is still usable, however it all comes down to the types of questions the instructor is asking in class. If the polling consists of alphanumeric inputs then the instructor would require students to purchase the i>clicker 2’s. Also the bookstore is NOT buying back i>Clicker 1 remotes, students who want to sell their older i>clickers can access this Rebate link (Links to an external site.). Students can also sell their remotes online and get a few more dollars on Amazon or Ebay. Students can use the same clicker in multiple courses.Rebate link (Links to an external site.) 7 2. 2. Tell your students your plans You'll want to make sure that your syllabus has appropriate instructions for the students to buy their own i>clicker remotes. You will also want to let students know they need to register their i>Clicker remotes on Canvas using the i>Clicker tool within their course. It's really easy -- here is the guide that we have created to help students register their i>Clickers: Registering Student i>Clickers in CanvasRegistering Student i>Clickers in Canvas Getting Started Configure i>Clicker Synchronize Roster Upload

8 3. 3. Stop by CMET Consulting to grab your "Instructor Kit" and in-person training: You'll need an "instructor kit" to take to class when you use clickers. Faculty planning to use clickers can borrow the kit for the duration of their instruction at the UO from CMET Consulting in the basement of the Knight Library in Room 19. Room 19 The instructor kit includes: i>Clicker base station (receiver), two i>Clickers (remotes), and a USB flash drive. You'll need to plug the base station into your laptop computer for polling students during class. When you stop by Consulting to grab your instructor kit, we will add you name to our i>Clicker instructors list so that we can make sure you receive important updates.
