I am standing in front of my students. We are listening to Ms. Piper in class. My daughter is talking on the phone right now. I am driving home and listening to the radio. My wife is making dinner at home. I am going to work tomorrow morning. She is playing soccer with friends tomorrow at the park. We are visiting our family in California in the summer. My sister is teaching me piano. WHAT IS PRESENT CONTINUOUS?
I am running. You are running. He is running. She is running. We are running. They are running. It is running. I am cutting fruit. You are cutting fruit. He is cutting fruit. She is cutting fruit. We are cutting fruit. They are cutting fruit. BE VERB + V-ING
We make Present Continuous by adding “ing” to the base verb. But what are the rules? Base Verb + ing Work -> Working Speak -> Speaking Sleep -> Sleeping Walk -> Walking Paint -> Painting Clean -> Cleaning If the word ends in vowel + consonant + e, omit the e Write -> writing Come -> coming Make -> Making Take -> taking VERB + ING
If the base verb ends in consonant + stressed vowel + consonant, double the last letter Stop -> stopping (last syllable of the verb is stressed) Run -> running Begin -> beginning (last syllable of the verb is stressed) Sit -> sitting Open -> opening (last syllable of the verb is NOT stressed so the rule doesn’t apply) If the base verb ends in ie, change the ie to y Die -> dying Lie -> lying EXCEPTIONS
