Tasks First you will research the history of the Pythagorean Theorem. Second you will investigate the many proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem. Third you will discover the practical applications of the Pythagorean Theorem. You will write and solve a problem involving the Pythagorean Theorem. Fourth you will complete ACUITY tutorials about the Pythagorean Theorem.

Process (task #1) Watch the following Youtube video to learn about the history of the Pythagorean Theorem:

Process (task #2) A mathematical proof is something that uses logic to show that the rule will always be true. There are hundreds of proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem. Investigate some of the various proofs at On the cut-the-knot website locate proof #36. Click on the link to the Dynamic Version. Resize and rotate the right triangle and notice how the square on the hypotenuse is always equal to sum of the other two squares.

Process (task #3) There are many real world applications of the Pythagorean Theorem. Skim through a a few of them at the following websites: a Now create your own real world problem that could be solved using the Pythagorean Theorem. The problem can be like the ones above or it can be similar to last night’s homework. After writing the problem draw a picture or diagram of the triangle involved. Lastly, solve the problem and show all work. You may use the calculator on the computer and round your answer to the nearest tenth. Don’t forget to label.

When you are done see Miss Deal and turn the paper in.
Conclusion On the back of the paper that you created your problem on answer the following questions using complete sentences. 1) How has your understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem changed? 2) What was your favorite part of this lesson? What was your least favorite part? 3) How would I change this activity to make it better? When you are done see Miss Deal and turn the paper in.

Process (task #4) Login to ACUITY Click on study Select mathematics Complete the Pythagorean Theorem tutorial (this will be graded)
