Italy is the 6th biggest country in the continent Europe. In terms of population, Italy is 5th and 23rd most populated country in Europe and World respectively. The country covers around 301,338 km2. The population in Italy is nearly over 61 million. The capital of Italy is Rome, which is the largest city and is also known as the “Eternal City”. Italy is also called as “Bel Paese” which means beautiful country.

4. GEOGRAPHY
To the north, Italy borders France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia.
To the south, it consists of the entirety of the Italian Peninsula and the two biggest Mediterranean Islands of Sicily and Sardinia.
The Po is Italy’s longest river.

The country has a long history, as Rome its capital city today was founded in 753 BC. After the Roman Empire broke down in 395 AD, there were many separate kingdoms and city-states. However, Italy became one nation only in 1861 and since then includes the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. It was a kingdom until 1946 after the Second World War, where Italy sided with the German Nazis. Italy is the founding member of the European Union (EU) and the NATO.
The Independence Day in Italy is celebrated on 17th March since its independence in 1861.The National Holiday known as the Republic Day falls on 2nd June each year, since the Italians voted to abolish the monarchy in 1946.

Favourite foods are pasta and pizza.

In fact not only every region, but also every small village has its own very typical dishes, often made with ingredients that can be grown or found only in that area. Italians are famous for their inventions and discoveries. The Italian explorers Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci discovered the Americas while Marco Polo explored the East.
