1 BODY LANGUAGE LESSON OBJECTIVES:
TO LEARN AND UNDERSTAND TYPES OF BODY LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS 7% of meaning is in the words that are spoken. 38% is the way that the words are said, tone of voice, and 55% is in facial expression!

2 Body Language Body language is a broad term for forms of communication using body movements or gestures instead of, or in addition to, sounds, verbal language, or other forms of communication. This includes the most subtle of movements that many people are not aware of, including winking and slight movement of the eyebrows In addition body language can also incorporate the use of facial expressions.

3 Types of Body Language

4

5 Brief examples Brisk walk- confidence Rubbing eyes-doubt
Crossed ankles- apprehension Rubbing hands- anticipation Tapping fingers- impatience Touching hair- lack of self confidence and insecurity Biting nails- insecurity and nervousness

6 Body Language If a person shows confidence and energy through body language they are more likely to do well, than a person who is not so confident. For example: If a sports person appears confident and ready for the competition their opponent will feel anxious and will not perform optimally which gives the positive sports person an advantage.

7 Positive body language
Positive body language shows that a person is in control and ready for the competition. Positive body language can be shown through routines which helps them to stay focused and confident. This routine could be performed before preparing to serve in tennis or taking a free shot in basketball. In sports, a wrong gesture can demotivate the entire team and can lead to match losses.

8 Improving performance
To improve our performance, for example in athletics, we could make sure that we looked confident to other opponents and not be put off if they appeared positive about the event. For example showing that you are tired in front of the opposition could give them more confidence which would lead to them performing better. By appearing confident we can also feel more positive about the event and therefore our performance would be enhanced.
