1. printed by www.postersession.com GENEVA PUBLIC ART Carrie Merrill & Rachel Braccini Hobart and William Smith Colleges ‘15 The Geneva Neighborhood Resource Center is sponsoring a committee tasked with evaluating current public art procedures and developing a more efficient and comprehensive plan for implementing public art. The GNRC and the Geneva Public Art Committee requested more information about how public art in Geneva is currently perceived, and what local artists, art teachers, and art sponsors would like to see for new art installments. We found a number of exciting grant opportunities for the GNRC and Geneva Public Art Committee and have developed a guide for application deadlines and artist collaboration grants. Through our interviews we have discovered a strong desire among community members to see art as educational and community-oriented, and are cataloguing suggestions for the GNRC as we develop our guides. Revitalizing Geneva Through Public Art The purpose of this study is to satisfy the needs of the Geneva Public Art Committee in their quest to develop a reasonable and realistic fundraising plan, as well as an education/community involvement plan as they embark on the process of implementing and acquiring more public art for Geneva. The problem currently facing this committee is a lack of information concerning potential grant opportunities, other methods of raising funds, and a desire for community engagement surrounding the implementation and development of public art. Our purpose is to research 5 grant opportunities, which will be used to generate funds for temporary and permanent art installations in the City of Geneva as well as for a marketing and promotion matrix. Furthermore, we will investigate possible community collaborations through interviews with educators and artists and develop a step-by-step guide for implementation of a community engagement program. Incorporated in this study is a look at comparable cities as basic sources of guidelines and ideas that could be beneficial for Geneva. By completing this survey of outside fundraising opportunities and educational possibilities, we hope to provide the Geneva Public Art Committee with ample resources in order to move forward with their plan for more public art in Geneva. Geneva is wonderful community that offers many attractions for both local families, students from the Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and also tourists and Summer residences. The downtown area offers a variety of restaurants, cafes, consignment shops and a new brewery that just opened Fall 2014. Not only do all of these aspects make Geneva the city in which so many people love today, but art also plays a major role in the city. Throughout the downtown area there are examples of public art in numerous locations. Castle Street is the home of not only murals and paintings in the City Hall, and United States Post Office, but there is also a well known mural on one of the brick walls. In order for the public art in Geneva to continue to flourish and grow, the GNRC needs to continue researching grant opportunities and other ideas for raising money for both art installations and new pieces of art to add to the collection.
