6 Food Allergy in Children Food allergies among children have increased approximately 50% between 1997 and 2011 in the US 1 Food allergies result in more than 300,000 ambulatory-care visits a year among children under the age of 18 1 Teenagers and young adults with food allergies are at the highest risk of fatal food-induced anaphylaxis Children with food allergies who also have asthma may be at increased risk for severe/fatal food allergy reaction 1. 7 Food Allergy in Schools Nearly 6 million children in the U.S. – which equates to 1 in 13, or roughly 2 in every classroom – have a food allergy 1 16-18% of school-age children who have food allergies have had a reaction in school 2 Approximately 25% of the reactions that occur at school, the student had not yet been diagnosed with food allergy 2 2013 CDC guidelines call for school plans for all children with known food allergies in “Voluntary Guidelines for Managing Food Allergies in Schools and Early Care and Education Programs. ” 1. 11 Diabetes in Schools About 208,000 Americans under age 20 are estimated to have diabetes, about 1 in 400 students All students with diabetes require blood glucose monitoring throughout the school day Most students with type I diabetes are on multiple daily injections, requiring insulin dosing while at school via syringe, insulin pen, or pump All students with type I diabetes require an Individual Health Care Plan and an Emergency Care Plan All students are protected under section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act, regardless of whether they have a formally written “504 plan”

15 § 16-38-2 Immunization. – (a) Every person upon entering any public or private school including any college or university in this state as a pupil shall furnish to the administrative head of the school evidence that the person has been immunized against any diseases that may from time to time be prescribed by regulation of the director of health and tested for tuberculosis, or a certificate from a licensed physician stating that the person is not a fit subject for immunization for medical reasons, or a certificate signed by the pupil, if over eighteen (18) years of age, or by the parent or guardian stating that immunization and/or testing for communicable diseases is contrary to that person's religious beliefs.
