2 Why email must operate 24/7
74% Of all communication sent by a typical user is sent through Business Critical has become an integral part of key business process and essential component of day-to-day operations: 74% of all communication sent by a typical end user is sent via And corporate traffic is project to grow 68% between 2008 – 2012. The impact of downtime can be felt in lower employee productivity and lost revenue. downtime can even pose an increased security risk as users resort to managing business s through personal accounts during outages. And with 30% of organizations experiencing outages that last 30 min or more per month, the costs of downtime begin to add up. In one significant example - construction management firm Native American Sciences Corporation believes that a major downtime incident cost the company a $75 million sale. Maximizing uptime for business critical systems poses challenges for small and large companies alike. To address these, organizations require effective tools that are affordable, can be activated quickly, and allow ongoing access to during an outage. 68% Volume Increasing Projected growth in corporate traffic between 2008 and 2012 30% Of organizations experience monthly outages lasting at 30 min or more Downtime = Lost Revenue and Productivity Sources: Osterman Research, Why Must Operate 24/7 and How to Make This Happen, 2009, Michael D. 4 Common approaches to email availability
Clustering High Cost $$$ Replication Let’s discuss some approaches to availability – all have different structures, benefits, and costs - and in fact can be used together to contribute greatly towards maintaining availability. Tape Backup Can be used to restore the system in the event of a catastrophic failure and is low cost. Tape is widely used as a form of backup, common part of disaster recovery strategy. However, it cannot be relied upon as a means to high availability as it does not provide continuity during an outage, takes a significant amount of time to restore (as much as 72 hrs) and companies are likely to experience some type of data loss gap during outage. Replication and Clustering These approaches involve a second complete system that provide a “hot standby” or mirror your primary system, and can be quickly activated in the event of an outage. They can be expensive, and are not immune to database corruption, Active Directory problems, viruses, or malware that are replicated to the secondary. Continuity Service continuity services offer a backup system that is synchronized with your primary . An continuity service activates automatically in the event of an outage in your primary system. The service is hosted at an off-site location so if you have an unplanned outage at your physical site, will be available when it is activated. This type of service does not replace, but complements traditional recovery and backup options to provide a highly available solution to .
