2 What is word stress? Word stress is the stressing of the most important word in a sentence so it stands out more than other words. “I really want to buy a book.” The highlighted word is stressed because it is the most important word in the sentence.

“I really want to buy a book.” The stressed syllable of this word is loud and slow. The most important word is often at the end of a sentence, especially at the beginning of a conversation. As a conversation continues, the word that gives new, or added, information becomes the most important word “Which book?” “That book.”

The thought groups are the group of words in the sentence that express thought and make sense together.
