2 Introduction What is the writing process ? Writing an essay takes time. That’s why writing is often referred to as a process. In other words, there are several steps to go through before you have a complete essay ready to turn in for a grade. Research takes place throughout the entire process, although for this project, we will do most in the beginning, right after pre-writing.They are:Pre-WritingOrganizingDraftingRevising and EditingHanding in a Final Copy
3 Pre-WritingStep OnePre-writing literally means, “before writing.” Before youactually begin writing your essay, you will need to do thefollowing things:choose a topic to write onbrainstorm or generate ideas foryour topicfocus in on central ideas
4 ResearchReview what types of sources are required for your project (book, website, magazine)Think about the ideas you focused in on while completing your pre-writing.Find the sources and the facts needed for your paper.Be sure to keep track of where the information is coming from!
5 OrganizingStep TwoMaking an outline can help you organize what you want towrite. This is a rough plan for your essay and can help makethe process of writing much easier.Essay OutlineIntroduction Thesis: _____________________Body 1. 6 DraftingStep ThreeAfter getting ideas and making an outline of your essay,it is time to start writing the essay. When you begin writingyour rough draft, try to remember the following guidelines.Don’t worry about writing the ‘perfect’ paperthe first time.Your goal in writing a rough draft is to developand support the ideas listed in your outline.Don’t focus on spelling and grammar as youwrite your rough draft. You can check this laterin the writing process.
7 Revising and Editing Step Four After you write your first draft, go back over it and look forways to improve your essay in content and organization.This step is called revision. After you revise for content andorganization, begin editing your draft for spelling, grammar,punctuation, and sentence structure errors.RevisionEditingContent andOrganizationSpelling,Grammar,Punctuation,etc.
8 The Final Copy Step Five The last step is turning in your essay to be graded. Lookat the guidelines below for turning in the final draft of youressay. word-processed all new paragraphs indented five spaces 8 ½ by 11 inch white paper double spaced, size 12 font one inch margins on all sides
