The muckrakers would become known for their investigative journalism of corruption and social problems. Thy dug up the ‘muck’ of social problems and corruption and exposed it to the light.  Merit System MY DEFINITION FOR THE WORD :   awarding jobs to the best qualified person USE THE VOCABULARY WORD IN A SENTENCE. The Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act made the merit system common practice by promoting and hiring government employees based on their ability to perform a job, rather than on their political connections.  Trustbuster MY DEFINITION FOR THE WORD :   a person working to destroy monopolies or trusts USE THE VOCABULARY WORD IN A SENTENCE. While in office, Roosevelt became a "trust buster" by forcing the great railroad combination in the Northwest to break apart. IN THE SPACE PROVIDED HERE, DRAW A PICTURE OF THE WORD!

 Corruption MY DEFINITION FOR THE WORD :   Bribery or kickbacks. Dishonesty USE THE VOCABULARY WORD IN A SENTENCE. The early 20th century saw a rise in corruption as political machines accepted bribes and kickbacks and controlled cities using dishonest methods. Civil Service  MY DEFINITION FOR THE WORD :   system that includes most government jobs (NOT elected positions, court system or military) USE THE VOCABULARY WORD IN A SENTENCE. The Civil Service Reform Act is an federal law that established the United States Civil Service Commission.
