The neuter lo is used with a masculine singular adjective to express an abstract idea or quality. *Neuters are essentially replacing the use of a noun with an adjective.

Ex. Lo cierto es que la computadora es un invento muy útil. The sure thing is that the computer is a very useful invention. Singular Adjective

Le di lo inútil a mi hermana. I gave the useless things to my sister. Lo peor de mi casa es el baño. The worst part of my house is the bathroom.

Lo nuevo es que él estudia. The new thing is that he studies. Lo importante es amar. The important thing is to love.

The neuter lo can also refer to an idea or quality already mentioned. [The lo refers to the adjective in the aforementioned sentence, not the noun(s)].

¡Esas fotos son horribles! -No, no lo son. Those photos are terrible! -No, they are not (horrible). *The lo is used as a substitute for the word horrible.

Es divertido hacer su propia ropa. -Sí, lo sé. It’s fun to make your own clothes. -Yes, I know (it is fun).

The pig is fat. -No, no it isn’t (fat). El cerdo es gordo. -No, no lo es.

Lo cual and lo que are used to refer to an idea previously mentioned. *Both phrases are interchangeable (except at the beginning of a sentence…then lo que MUST be used) in this use and can be translated into meaning which in English.

Gabriela Mistral era una gran escritora chilena, por lo cual ganó el Premio Nóbel de Literatura en 1945. Gabriela Mistral was a great Chilean writer, for which reason she won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1945.

Mi abuela está aprendiendo a tejer, lo que la ayuda a pasar el tiempo mientras está en el hospital. My grandma is learning to knit, which helps her pass time while she is in the hospital.

My brother receives really good grades, for which reason he loves school. Mi hermano recibe buenísimas notas, por lo cual le encanta la escuela.

However, the use of lo cual is limited only to sentences in which there is an antecedent or person/noun already mentioned. Thus, if there is no antecedent, one must use lo que. *Lo que in this case is translated into meaning what.

No entiendo lo que quiere decir, señor. I don’t understand what you mean, sir. No puedo describir lo que vi en la calle esta mañana. I can't describe what I saw in the street this morning.

Enrique began to shout in a very loud voice, which bothered his family very much. Enrique empezó a gritar en voz muy alta, lo cual (lo que) le molestó mucho a su familia. What you said doesn't make any sense. Lo que dijiste no tiene sentido.
