Mapping: important terms Geocoding: turning addresses into map co-ordinates (usually latitude and longitude) that can be plotted on a digital map. API – application programming interface. Allows developers to build their own applications using a particular technology – e.g GoogleMaps Map API key – unique code that identifies your map SDK – software development kit

Mapping tools for journalists Googlemaps The most widely used mapping tool. Now available with several different APIs: Googlemaps Javascript API – requires understanding of javascript and php. Flash API - for using Googlemaps within Flash CS3 projects GoogleEarth API – 3D mapping. Requires javascript and Google Earth plug-in Static Maps API - for creating simple, non-interactive maps to embed on web pages. No coding knowledge required Google spreadsheet mapper Google spreadsheet mapper A way of mapping your data, using a simple spreadsheet that you upload to Google. Google Fusion Mapper Google Fusion Mapper Similar to Google Spreadsheet mapper, but with more complex functionality

Mapping tools for journalists Bing maps Bing maps Microsoft’s version of Google maps. Includes various ‘ready made’ apps, including a Twitter app for mapping geo-located tweets. Requires Silverlight to be installed to create maps. Batchgeo: simple map-making tool using Google maps API, but without the need for coding Batchgeo amMap – interactive map creation tool using simple outlines of countries for use within web pages. Minimal coding required, but some set-up required on your own PC. amMap

Mapping tools for journalists Vidmap – geotagging for videos Vidmap Crowdmap – crowdsourcing mapping project. Allows users to text or tweet updates direct to a map that you create. Crowdmap Zee maps – simple map-making tool. Includes ‘wikimap’ option, to allow multiple users to contribute to your map. No coding required. Free, but you can pay to remove advertising. Zee maps OpenSourceMap – wiki map with data supplied by general public. An alternative to Google Maps or Bing API OpenSourceMap
